For all you Experts out there...[:D] Dose anybody have a rough idea how much i would spend on a engine rebuild of a s2 unit... I know this answer can differ but i guess im talking about parts only, based on all parts that would normanly be replaced during ths process...

Cheers Steve.

Steve. Get in touch with EMC in birmingham,+ ask them..
I would have thought anything between £2K + £4K all depends if you need steel liners or not [ scored bores]. And you wont know that untill the engine is in bits....

In fact scratch that,, just buy my car instead....

I have seen replacement engines go from 600 notes upwards but the 6 hundred unit was good, The engine in my car seems to be good but the mileage is creeping up and im starting to notice little odd noises now and then which make me think soon it will need some type of engine work, current mileage is 146k and i think now the engine is being used harder than ever ( when it is used ! )... i guess the best thing to do would be run it until something breakes and then go from there [:)]....... What did they use to say ? If it aint broke dont fix it....

146k should be fine. It probably needs camshafts if it hasn't had them, but other than that and regular maintenance it will go for a long time yet.

I have checked them and they dont look to bad, i replaced the chain, chain tensioner and tensioner pad so hopefuly all should be well on that part for a while...

I was thinking more about the case hardening as well as the sprocket teeth.

In terms of replacing the chain alone I've always been very dubious of that as advice. Has anyone checked their sprockets a while after changing the chain? I always understood that with a drive chain you always replace the whole lot in one go (a la motorcycle chains and sprockets) otherwise the new/old components in combination wear each other out very quickly.

Fen As far as im aware.
If the chain is changed at regular intervals, ie 60K ish miles then there should be no probs.
Its when the chain etc is changed at 100K intervals , is when the problems can occur. IE the sprockets have worn in a certain way , then the new chain wears them differently + voila teeth breakage...

That theory would only work if the onset of any appreciable wear has not started by 60k miles. How likely is that?
