Engine rebuild

Finally started to assemble my engine for the car. Cleaned up the crank yesterday and also the carrier and fitted the crankcase in the engine stand. The case then needed to come out as I had to helicoil the crank sensor location as the bolt had snapped in there. Got the carrier all built up after changing the oil squirters and putting in the new main bearings and thrusts. Got 3 rods fitted and then discovered my torquewrench only went down to 20 lb/ft and the big ends are 15 so these will have to wait. Cleaned the sump baffle plate as well and fitted that, there were 6 new bolts in the gasket set. I also measured the ring gaps of all the rings and found not too much bore wear at all which was good. Went to put the new tensioners on the carrier and found the circlip loose so that stopped play as I could have got in to torque the big ends up one of the bores. Probably easier when the carrier and crank is out though! Pretty much all ready to go together now, lots of cleaning still to do and also to strip the oil pump. It is amazing to see how much corrosion the cases have compared to earlier cars.

Some progress over the weekend, managed to get the pistons all fitted to the 1-3 bank yesterday and get the carrier in. Got the 4-6 crankcase on today and started to fit the pistons for that bank. Absolute pain as when you remove the tool for holding the rod straight in the case, the rod starts to move either way before you can get the gudgeon pin in. A quick trip to the house for a wire coathanger and then using a Snap On diagnostic boroscope, managed to align the rod and get the gudgeon pin in. Got the 2 pistons in, went to put the last piston in and nipped an oil control ring in the ring compressor. Will have to order another tomorrow and get the last piston in. No other parts fitted yet until the last piston goes in in case it needs to come apart if I make an arse of it putting the last one in! Hopefully there will not be a month back order for it. Will get some pictures tomorrow.
