Engine rebuild

I am new to the forum and need some help to make a few decisions related to my 911 E. I have owned the car for 10 years , it was pretty much my day to day driver for 8 of those years. The work that has been done on the car has only ever been just enough to keep it on the road safely, which means the car has probably never run how it is meant to. Now that budget allows I have decided to strip the car and begin what will probably be a long restoration, but i do want to make sensible upgrades along the way. Cost and budget are not too much of an issue on the basis that if a mod makes sense then I will find a way to do it.

The subject of the engine however is cuasing me headaches as far as the best route to go is concerned. How to I get more power out of my 2.2 engine. The modifications I do here, how will that affect the rest of the car, i.e. running gear , gearbox etc. What I do know is I dont want to swop the engine out for a bigger one.

I have never done and engine rebuild before but have always promised myself I would, any advice on what I am letting myself in for would be appreciated.

The extra expense is improving the power output is related to the current condition of the engine. If the barrels and pistons need replacing, then the fitment of a set of 89 mm B&Ps giving you a 2.5 motor, would not cost you any more than a set of standard 84 mm B&Ps. Other power increases can be achieved by raising the compression ratio, which is achieved with different pistons, better camshafts and some work on the heads. Twin plugging will allow an even greater CR but will cost £1500 - £2000. Any rebuild will almost certainly require rebuilds of the MFI pump, the butterfly assemblies and new valves and guides. The price of all these parts and work if you are doing the build work yourself would be around £5000. A simpler way to increase power if you are not worried about originality would be to drop in a larger motor, either a 2.4 or 3.0. A 3.0 would push your gearbox to it's limits, a 2.4 would be fine if the box is healthy.
