Engine removal

I've got to do an engine swap this weekend
Does anybody have any words of wisdom about the best way to do this / things to watch out for etc?
Are there any decent guides on the internet?

I've just played this game with a turbo... the best advice is ignore the Haynes book of Lies!

The gearbox/torque tube do not have to move, seperate at the torque tube/bellhousing interface, drop the crossmember, rear wishbone mounts, anti-roll bar, and the steering shaft has to be seperated from the rack to allow it to drop enough. The engine can then be lowered from its mounts, and with the radiator and a few other anciliaries out of the way, pulled straight forward, up, and away.

Crossmamber must come out I m afraid, with stteering rack.
Undo both ends of steering column lower section, slide 1 back to allow other end to disconnect, undo tie rods and power steering pipes front wishbone bolts and then the 4 crossmember bolts.
Have you taken the rad out? I found it impossible with it still in, also dizzy and arm.

thanks for that,thats what i ended up doing,now i have to do the same on the other car,along with changing the engine loom,they recomend taking the engine out by dropping it,i tried that and it was hopeless.
 
I held engine up took crossmember off dropped engine on to sheet of ply and lifted front of car up high and slid it out. the awkward bit is moving the engine forward far enough to clear the prop shaft from the clutch.
What engine is going in? I put an 86 in my 83 944 and had to change the engine loom and most awkwardly the breather valve under the inlet manifold, also the fuel rail, various vacumn lines and breather pipes!

the engine is out of my 1980 ,924,it's going into my 1979 924 ,but the loom attached to the engine is a round plug on the 79,and the 80 plug is square,but i cant seem to find the temp wires on the loom i fitted and i dont have a spare connector block

I was just enquiring as it looked like you were doing a major rebuild. Of course with the gearbox out the easiest thing to do is to undo to four bell housing bolts from the torque tube and draw that back rather than upset all your steering geometry, but as you haven't removed the gearbox the question is interesting but academic.
 
right lads i now have the engine in,
what a bitch of a job ,i hope i never have to take it out again,i can understand why a porsche mechanic would charge exhorbitant rates.they'd earn every penny.
will post some pics during the week.
now i have to work out where all the fuel pipes connect,to but trial & error is what it's all about.
 
It's all about expectation Batavus. I've done it a couple of times and coming up to a third and I never thought it a bitch. Dropping the front suspension is a pain but two bolts and the steering rack is hardly a bitch. You should try a 924 turbo sometime.

 
i've taken a lot of engines out and re fitted them,but i've never had to strip half the car to do it,but you live and learn,as for the turbo i dread to think of what that entails,but it's in now so i'm chuffed.
mind you i can recall stripping a yamaha xj650 turbo years ago,wasn't that bad.
