Engine runs without a key...

Dear All,

I wonder whether a few of you have solved the problem I experience with my 993 C2:

Even if I turn the key to the left and take it off the engine isn't killed and continues to run. [8|] The only way to "switch" the engine off is to stall it. As a consequence all cockpit lights are on and the car cannot be locked using the key's remote button.

This isn't a regular issue but seems to be become more regular: First time I experienced it was about 3 years ago as a one-off. For two weeks , this happens more frequently. I was always lucky that I could park the car at home as normal but last night, I ended up disconnecting the battery after parking the car.

The 993 starts as normal but just doesn't kill the engine when the key is taken off.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is it a relay-problem and if so which one is it?
Does anyone have experience how to solve this, please?

Many thanks and kind regards,
Julian

Sounds like the ignition switch from what you have described!
Might be trying wd40 in it and see if it helps?

Graham and Gordon,

many thanks for your ideas! I will try to tackle this with WD40 and will keep you posted regarding the result.

Have a good afternoon,
Julian

Hello everyone
many thanks for your messages and trying to help solving the problem.

I brought the car to an independent garage in London and after a few hours of searching, they figured out that one of the relays 811 951 253 was faulty (they said the right one if standing in front of the car facing the car). They repaired the relay and the problem was solved.

I hope you don't have to experience the same problem but if so, I hope post helps!

Many thanks and always have a safe drive!

Julian

No, that is the oil cooler & condenser fan relay, cant for the life of me see why a faulty one would cause the starter switch not to work! I fear you may see problems again in the future

Hello,
some others suggested it was R11 (Terminal 15E) and not R04 but hey... glad to have the problem solved and happy it was down to a relay (only).

I copy that.

Had a similar problem with a Lotus where running on was caused by a coolant fan which, as intended, kept going after the ignition switched off. i am not an electrician, but somehow it developed a fault and powered the ignition. It made sense at the time as the fault only occurred when the car was hot.
