Engine seals

Hi,
Is it true if u have your cam belt and shaft belt changed, that u need to change the engine seals?
My mechanic said that if they are leaking oil when he opens the front cover then he will need to change them at a cost of £300 (ouch!)

Also is it true that a tensioner block costs £200, at that price I'd rather just change the plastic bit at the top. Surely the cast iron block will not break?

Pls advise

Well if the front seals are leaking then yes you ought really to change them. If leaky, the front seals can contaminate your new belts which will reduce their life and then cause you big £££££ problems if they snap. You can't spot a minor leak until the belt covers are off, this is where you have to trust your mechanic (unless you can watch over him [:D] ) Hopefully he is just responsibly warning you of possible expenditure in advance and there will be no leaks (mine never have - touch wood)

The tensioner unit for the cam chain is around £200 but the plastic ramp that pushes onto the chain is a couple of quid. Again you cannot tell if the tensioner itself has worn out until you get the cam cover off. Hopefully its fine and a new pad will be all thats needed for several more years worry free motoring.

If seals are leaking enough to contaminate the belts the centrifugal force sends oil all around the inside of the cover and will drip from the bottom.
