ENGINE SIZE

I asked myself the same thing a couple of months ago. I did my research on running costs; RFL and insurance, I checked the performance differentials, and decided I wanted a 2.7. Then I saw a great spec. 3.4S and bought that instead! My head said to buy the 2.7, but the 3.4S came along at the right time, being the right spec. for me. [I have made the assumption, possibly incorrectly, that you'll be buying secondhand, the smaller engine new today is 2.9 litres now]. Regards David
 
I havent driven a 2.7 but I did have a pdk 3.4S as a courtesy car yesterday and was amazed how quick it was. It wasnt really noticeably slower than my (manual) 997 C4S but that may just be my gear changes. I think the pdk also sneaks into the <225g tax bracket. Sorry, probably not a terribly helpful post but I was very impressed with the car.
 
thanks for the response, another question, tiptronic or manual, just sold my manual 996 i found the gear change very heavy. Just wondered if the cayman manual was any lighter?
 
the 3.4s pdk is a complete joy-if you can stretch to one you wont regret it of the gen 1 (if you have to!)i would definately go for a shortshift man 3.4 with sportchrono-the 2.7 lacked grunt for me and the tip box d4finately saps the power-but if you do lots of town driving you may want to sacrifice that best of luck
 
I haven't driven the 2.7 or the 3.4, but 24 hrs in a 2.9 convinced me it was easily fast enough for me, and 3 months on I don't regret my decision. I think the 2.9, with 6 speed manual and 265 BHP, is very little in the way of a compromise. The £8k premium for the S seems too much for what on paper seems a modest power increase (accepting you also get leather and 18" alloys). You haven't said what your budget is, so perhaps a 2.9 is not an option for you....
