Engine smoke on start up

Hi all
im relatively new to Porsche ownership and after purchasing my dream car late last year (C2S ,997, 2005) its not all been plain sailing !!!
i took the car to Nurburgring in october last year and on a couple of occasions she belched white smoke out on starting. i assumed that perhaps i'd overfilled it.Drove the car home and i've never had the problem since.
How ever i took the car to Castle Combe yesterday for a track day and after the first session the problem had returned, the smoke lasted for about 30 seconds then all was good. After the second session i started the car again but this time the smoke lasted for about 2 minutes ,so an early bath for me and back home.
My friends who i'd travelled up with said that there was no smoke whilst on the track when i passed them, or on the roads on the way up!!!
your thoughts please
Tony

Tony,

It's possible that your air-oil separator (AOS) has failed. Did you get a CEL warning too? And is the oil filler cap difficult to remove (due to a high vacuum level in the crankcase)? Both are typical symptoms.

Has the problem only occurred on your track day outings or do you experience it in normal running too? I seem to recall someone posting a similar problem recently on the forum and I think that it was suggested that it could be related to oil surge during high-speed track running.

Best to get the problem checked out and rectified if it is the AOS to prevent oil-contamination of the sparking plugs and the catalytic converters.

Thanks Jeff
The problem has only occurred after track use and there has been no warning lamps . The oil filler cap didn't seem to be difficult to remove when i took it off yesterday at the circuit ,was just checking for any nasty deposits
if i need to take her somewhere to get her checked out can any one recommend a good independent specialist in the Bristol/Somerset area
Many thanks Tony

That was me posting recently. For my specific issue, it was more likely to be an oil surge, was recommended to keep my oil level below max (one or two below for track driving). It's also been commented on that the standard AOS can be overwhelmed (986 especially) under hard track conditions hence the availability of a motorsports modified part being available. I'd have expected a CEL light to potentially come on if it was registering a serious issue - like it did for me.

It sounds like your situation could be the same as mine. See my post on the Boxster forum.

Unfortunately not my area Tony, but you might want to have a look at this PH list to see if there's a local Porsche specialist:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=48&t=394669&mid=0&nmt=Specialists%2C+sales+and+servicing

Also, Advanced Car Care are listed in the back pages of Porsche Post ( http://www.advancedcarcare.co.uk/ ).

Good luck.

Jeff

Guys
I was always told to keep oil level no higher that 3/4 ontrackdays az it expands! under extreme use and the pressures involved

Thanks for all the advice/help
What ever happened to a good old fashioned dip stick ???
The oil level gauge seems to have a mind off its own and never seems to give the same reading twice!!
Guess I'll have to get brave and go and start her up this morning , haven't started her since I got home on Friday
Cheere Tony
