Engine Smoke

The old girl hadn't been out for a while so after a clean I decided a quick run out.

About a mile up the road there was smoke coming out of the engine.

I stopped, let it cool down, spun it round and coasted down the hill.

When I got back I checked under the bonnet and noticed that the coolant reservoir was empty []

We topped this up and re-started the engine. We let it idle for some time.

This time there was no smoke and there was nothing coming out of the exhaust.

So you think this was a case of simple over heating or something more sinister?

Thanks.

Sounds like you have a leak somewhere, so keep an eye on the coolant level for the next few days.

If you did overheat, then hopefully your gaskets are ok, so keep a careful eye on everything. I can't think what the smoke from the bonnet could be unless it got so hot something rubber melted []

The old girl has been in the garage for a couple of weeks and on popping the bonnet tonight I again noticed that there was no coolant there.

There doesn't appear to be any leaks on the garage floor.

Any ideas?

I had the same problem. It seemed to be drinking water but no puddles.

I actually replaced the top rad hose completely (I run a oil cooled turbo only, so I finally got around to deleting the ally spider for the various routings in the turbo cars) and it solved the problem. I guess it is that when you run the car, it pressurises the system and you create the leak. When you shut the car off, you don't notice anything gone as the pressure is keeping the tank full. let it cool and the pressure goes and the water level drops.

Honestly though, I dunno how you can detect where the leak is, but I can tell you there is one!

If it is a pressure induced leak (and it does sound like it) then it's time to get it down to a garage with a pressure tester so they can find it for you. Otherwise the coolant might get too low while you're out driving and overheat, causing a potential £££££ []
