Engine sounds like a sewing machine at times

Just a couple of weeks in owning my "new" 944S and the problems are starting to pile up..my main concern is the knocking/ticking sound from somewhere in top end..it comes and goes randomly but for the past few days it's been there all the time..checked that cambelt tension and alignment this morning and all seems ok - marks are where they should be, belt tension ok but 1 of the flywheel sensors is missing!?
Other problems include noisy N/S wheel bearing, cooling fan being connected to a switch on dashboard and it doesn't work, ignition switch worn (need to turn it back a few mm after starting engine, otherwise most electrics don't work), slight oil leaks from various places and the list goes on..
I actually bought this car only to get a set of wheels with new tyres, headlight mechanism and some more parts for my early 944 but since it was a 16V engine which is new to me, i was hoping to drive it for a while..but now it doesn't seem worth putting all the money and effort in..it's due to 12k service as well so i'm afraid the service kit i bought will now go into my Sapphire Metallic instead along with the other parts and i shall be enjoying my 8V engine very soon..
PM me if there's any parts you may need off a 1987 944S 16V as it will be going for spares soon..it has full service history and loads of quite recent invoices for new parts (injectors, valves etc.).

sorry to here you are having problems.

The ticking noise is probably the injectors. Try putting a long screwdriver or wooden rod on each injector and putting the other end to the front of your ear . You should be able to track down the source .

Re the fan switch. This is fitted because the fan is wired directly to the battery and is constant live even when ignition switched off. I suspect that your radiator temperature switch is faulty and the battery has been run flat in the past. Fit a new rad stat then you can safely remove the switch

The reason that it does nothing is probably because you tested the switch when the engine and rad wasn't hot enough. Try after a hard run and you'll know which position to leave the switch in for the fan to work.

Wheel bearings are cheap enough and if its a front brg they are a straightforward DIY job. Rear bearings require a press to remove and replace so best left to a garage unless you have some experience.

The 16 valve engine is a beautiful engine , smooth and considerably more powerful than the 8 valve. If the bodywork is sound it might be worth doing a costing on the mechanical work.
