Engine Squeak!

Hi, I wonder if anyone else has encountered this problem and if so, how they cured it. It all started a few months ago, when starting the engine of my 2000 'S' (hot or cold), after one or two seconds I would hear a squeak. At first I was sure it was a belt slip problem, possibly caused by something (A/C compressor or alterator) cutting in and momentarily slipping. It wasn,t! Then I thought it was caused by a worn engine mount it wasn,t! I now think, as does my local mechanic, that it is caused by a leaking valve in the engine vacuum system. The sound has become worse and can be provoked easily by pulling away from rest without sufficient revs, or by pulling away from a corner in too high a gear. Has anyone encountered this? If so was it a valve? Which valve was it? Any help gratefully received!

Tony.

Whether its the belt or not, its now due its second inspection / replacement (every 4 years) - not expensive job so migth be worth doing just purely to eliminate it and inspect pulleys etc during the change.

Thanks Julian, have you experienced this problem? Is it a DIY job? (I'm pretty competent). What did it cost? Tony

Hi Tony.

No I've not experienced this particualr problem, but I've seen plenty of references on the web to a failed AOS making a squeeling noise.

I have however replaced my AOS, bellows and "J-tube" for the latest updated versions (I have a 1997 2.5 Boxster). I think the whole lot came to about ~£75 for the three items (from memory) from the OPC parts desk.

Installing it is not too bad - just seeing what you are doing is the hardest bit. But once you can see the part (through the right hand wheel arch I seem to recall), then its OK. Might take you 2hrs to do.

I experienced a squeak, sounded all most like a bird churping! The engine was removed and the only thing found was a slightly loose spark plug !! Good luck.....
