Engine swaps - 2.7l to 2.5l

Elliot

New member
i have just taken in a 2.7l white 944 with a crackered engine but immaculate elsewhere.

I have several 2.5 88 engines and was contemplating installing one.

Would this be a straight forward swap, ie ECU and loom or is it more involved?

I am also looking for a 2.7l auto radiator if anybody has one.

looking forward to your comments about the swap as i am looking forward to this project.

"Crackered"?
Would be interested in the head if it's in good shape...

The heads yours if i get some decent info on what i need to do to use a 2.5l

Thanks for suggestion of S2 engine but i would rather use one of the 8 good 2.5 engines i have.

cheers

I can't imagine that the 2.7 engine was radically different from the normal engine in terms of engine management system so I guess you will need to replace ECU's too as I don't think they were EPROM based ECU's so wont be a simple case of swapping chips. But in terms of input sensors are the two engines that different?

I guess the sensor set up is identical. The question I would ask is do the 2.7 litre wiring looms use the same cable and pin idents. I suppose the only way of checking that would be some serious trawling through circuit diagrams. I wouldn't envy that task. PS Elliot are you open this Friday? Was thinking of popping over to have a chat about some parts.

Pretty sure the loom is the same but the AFM and DME is different, as long as you use late 2.5bits you should be fine.
The early (square dash) DME will not work with a late loom.
An earlier block may not have an oil level sensor, not critical.

Hi Elliot

There is a fairly low mileage 2.7 L engine for sale on ebay flea bay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270642848413&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I was toying with the idea of doing a 2.7L Turbo Combo but I think the 2.7L woun't take the Turbo Set Up !

If I was you try and keep the 944 Original to hold it's value , 2.7L 8V option are more rare !

If not I would drop the 2.5L in , plug it up and see what happens !!!!! I think it will run ! Maybe a bit over fuelled !!!

Best of luck with your project

"UK buyers only" ... [:(]

Two sorts of fuel pressure regulators were used on the 2.7, firstly the 2.5 bar unit then the 3.8 bar unit also used on the S2 and 968. I can find out what version your car has if you e-mail me its VIN.
This is only specific 2.7 detail I am aware of, and apart from that, as already said above, you should be able to install an '88 engine with its DME without any particular issue.

i look after my son on fridays but can pop down if you call me with expected time of arrival (only live 2 miles away).

Just had a delivery of nine cars so plenty of interiors and parts available.
