Engine Tick

Hi

Recenly bought a 96 997 C4S. Done 32k and have noticed a ticking noise from the engine that stops as revs rise. Is this normal ?

The DFI engine is quite noticeably "ticky" at idle - much more so than the Gen 1 - which is injector sound. Is the ticking clearly audible inside the car with the windows up? If so I would suggest something is not quite right.

Gary - why would having a dirty car make it tick? Tut maybe........[:D]

No the noise cannot be heard when in the car with windows shut. The noise is most noticeable around the drivers side rear wheel arch area while ticking over. Disappears as revs rise towards 2000rpm.

hi bathroom
i hope this isnt the 'tick' revered to by portiacraft on their website ... I posted a question last week asking for 'thoughts please'... on what portiacraft had written but didn't get much of a response...maybe if I'd called it 'suspected death tick of 2006 997's I may have had a few more comments but I'm not hear to scare people
I was just asking for the forum's view on what Porticraft had written, if people had heard about it or had any experiences with the 'tick' of 2006 cars as porticarft claimed...basically there were saying it is the first sign of IMS failure = new engine = a bloody expensive nightmare
as you car is a 2006 model this post may well apply so I'd recommend you have a look
anyway i don't want to alarm you at all but if you were to look at what was written then it is probably best to get the engine checked out
cheers

I noticed a ticking but it sound more from the exhaust rather than engine..
Can hear it in car also not much but a little and not all the time... think it goes when its warmed up.. any ideas?
wow I get no problems with my car and I get 3 at once..

Nightmere ! The engine tick has been diagnosed as piston slap and i am now faced with a engine rebuild cost of min 5k. I have contacted a couple of people local to me who own 997's and cannot believe that they both have cars with the same problem ! One has paid out 12k for a new engine and the other has car in garage while saving for repair. Have subsequently checked this out on the net to find whole forums dedicated to this problem.
Would appreciate any comments from anyone who has experienced this problem and where i should go from here ?

my car has a gold warrenty that came with the car when the garage sold me it, but wouldnt they just try and get out of it?
anyhow my tick is when idle, 3 ticks per second, seems to be passenger side but its more exhaust, checked oil cap for white, none.
ticking gets faster as car is reved to 2000 but does go when driving after a while.
can also hear it inside car.

Porsche have offered to strip engine to diagnose the extent of the problem and at that point discuss the level of good will they would extend. Problem being you are then at the point of no return. They have suggested the figure could be 13k plus and even if goodwill is 50% its alot of money to be spending on a 4 year old car that has been looked after by the book.

Yours Sincerely

No Longer a Porsche Fan.

I honestly would be shocked if Porsche didnt agree to help with the issue.
I always assumed an engine re-build was MUCH better than a replacement from the OPC, autofarm can supply the engine and hart fit it, I aksed before I bought mine and was told 5k would easy cover it.

If the OPC don't pay for the whole repair I'd mention the Porticraft article
I'd even call Porticraft and ask them about the quantity of the 06 987's they have seen with this problem and quote this to the OPC
From what they wrote they wont even buy them in to sell on now as they say the problem is so bad
I know I keep going on about it but it seems pretty common
I read the text on their site about 4 weeks ago and now bathroom has the exact problem....£13k is a joke and Porsche should be liable
I wish Topgear would highlight this IMS issue

but is the 04-09 not the same spec? why just the 06s? or am I so wrong with my dates [:)]
also an engine rebuild is better than a new engine as all the issues can be upgraded from the guys down hart.

Bathroom said he purchased recently so I hope he may have rights under statute- simply put if you have purchased from a trade seller there is a 6 month period of protection for defective goods, regardless of warranty or goodwill gestures. If anyone has this kind of problem with a Porsche (or any other car) they should be in a strong position to get it sorted out by the seller. There is of course the possiblity (which i have not seen mentioned in articles) that the car has been run with low oil at some time; if that was pre-purchase i dont think it matters- the trade seller would be held responsible for supplying a car of suitable quality.
We do not know much about the facts in this case; it would be very intersting for other owners to know if anyone has made use of the statutory rights in this kind of situation and how the OPC / trade seller reacted to the claim.
