Engine Tinware

Last week I got my car back from my mechanics as I have had him drop the engine and gearbox so I can tart them up a bit and remove the sound deadening from the engine bay as it is falling off anyway...

I got a phonecall to say that:

1) 5 wheel nuts had sheared (2 on left rear, 3 on right rear)
2) 1 piece of Tinware has rusted through and is useless, replacement cost £175

Not happy, as the labour for dropping the engine and removing knackered wheel nuts was £500! Christmas is definately cancelled.

Add salt to wallet wounds I get another call earlier today to say that the rest of the tinware has come back from the shot blasters and is basically useless and all needs replacing.

How "important" is this tinware, and does anyone know any suppliers that won't rob me blind as it seems very expensive for what it is...

Wish I'd left the engine in, as it seems to work fine anyway [:(]

The tin ware is important Ollie along with a rubber seal it protects the engine from road crap. Look on the Porshce PET parts file for your model and get a price direct from Porsche, failing that try a breakers and tell them you only want good stuff, you might get lucky, it's normal for old tin to fall apart when being blasted, mine did too. I got nearly new tin from a breakers for about £50.00 for the lot. I doubt the tin on an RS is any different to standard 964.
Incidentally that is a lot of wheel nuts to break in one go, sounds a bit careless to me.

I don't want to suggest the obvious but.........change your techie. Actual engine +box removal should take a competant individual versed in the 964 no more than a couple of hours! 500 quid seems a bit steep if that's all the work done. Shot blasting thin plate tinware is not a good idea in the first place. Fortuately there is not too much of it so things should not be too disasterous. I found that using Carb cleaner on mine brought the tinware back to bare metal, far less agressive than shot blasting but a rather smelly job(wear a good quality mask/respirator). The bits at the rear of the engine (towards the front of the car) seem to take the worst and were the most corroded on my previous RS. Even so the panels were savable for a few more years with proper clean up and rust preventer applied. I found a satin black to be the closest to the original finish and I was most pleased when my former RS won it's class in the region concours and praise was given to the engine detail.

Hmmm.

I had a sheared wheel nut also when Chris took mine off and it was the locking one and he had to drill it out.....[8|]

That will teach you to mess around with your car when it's working fine - can you see your engine bay through your windscreen? No? Well stop worrying about it then and concentrate on using the thing more[;)]

Have to say my bills seem to be quite high whenever the car goes in to him...

Did your wheels come out unscathed from the knackered nuts Ollie?

The wheels came out untouched, partly down to me recommending that if they are damaged I would not be paying for them to be sorted, but I think they survived because it seems like it took a good five or so hours to remove the nuts!

I think next time it goes in I will insist on taking a more hands on role and make sure I am not being led up any garden paths.

I know what you mean, I only hope that since he moved to the new premises we are not expected to fund all of it []

Nuts -I always smear some copper grease on the studs when I change wheels over -also put some on the rear face of the wheel where it is in contact with the hub -fact is, with the wheels coming on and off at least once a month in the track day season they havn't got a chance to seize!

Ollie.

I was at the workshop looking at my car at the time of your wheel nuts shearing.

Feel free to PM me and I am also happy to talk to you on the phone if you wish to have my opinion ... but you were not ripped off and there was no shoddy workmanship.

Ian.

PS I had a good look over your car out of interest and it is a really gorgeous car :thumbsup

I visit once a week ... he is 10 mins away ... and he looks after my cars ..... your point is?

Hi Ollie

Sorry to hear things didn't go as planned - that will teach you to try and tart up your RS!

Try Porscheapart - they often seem to have very good quality used parts at sensible prices>

Where do you take your car?

Regards

Hi Yoda,

I've learnt my lesson, if it aint broke dont fix it [:D]

I take my car to Chris at GCR and have always had great service from him personally, just sometimes I need to convice myself that parts for our cars are really that expensive.

At least I don't drink or smoke or shop a great deal [;)]

How's the RS Cold Turkey?

Hi Ollie

I think that is where RJ is planning to take the Millenium Falcon [:D]. Agree some of the parts can be expensive but the good thing is that things don't go wrong that often. Could be a little hassle but I also found buying parts in Europe was a lot cheaper than over here (as much as 30-40% off) so if it was planned work it was fine. Servicing is also cheaper there but more convenient to do here.

RS Cold Turkey .......... ok in the middle of winter but I do miss not having the car. At least I am not spending time thinking I am not driving it enough though. I think the worst part is not being able to plan things for next year as I don't have any suitable wheels. I am making do with a couple of projects though and that is keeping me busy. Look forward to catching up sometime to get a fix!!

Take care
