Engine vibration

Advice needed.
I've got an '89 S2 with 70K miles (genuine) on the clock.
It was a little bit viby below 2000 revs so I thought due to the age it might be worth changing the engine mounts. Unfortunately it's now considerably worse. They had the correct part numbers, but look different to the originals. Anybody had this experience or know of any differences with engine mounts.
I'm tempted to refit the originals.
Cheers

New mounts can only be "better" assuming they are the correct ones, you say they look different - were they just a bit higher, ie not collapsed? Did they fit one or both, - was the fitter familiar with 944 model? Anyone been near the Balance shaft belts recently?

Sorry for all the questions,

George

Can't recall what the exact difference was but i'll try and find out. The balance shafts havn't been touched. The mechanic is very experienced (but not 944's). I assume fitting is a straight replacement i.e. - there is no adjustment in the mounts themselves once fitted.

New mounts should be a big improvement - is the exhaust touching somewhere now? Were they genuine replacements?

The mounts changed design during the life so as long as they were the correct part numbers the mounts should be OK. It is also possible that the originals had leaked and collapsed making them look different. The engine will now be in a different position so it's possible something else (e.g. exhaust, as mentioned earlier) is now touching the bodyshell. Failing that, it could be the balance belt out by a notch. If so, get the belts done immediately - if the balance belt lets go it will take the timing belt with it and then you'll be looking for a new engine....
