engine warm up

Hi Lads,
On the very early turbo is it normal for the engine to rev lightly until warmed up?
How long should this last?
Since mine became sick it now doesn't do this, that a problem yeah?
Can anyone explain what happens when the motor does this or has anyone got info regarding the warm up in general
cheers
frank

well, I crank it up and it revs itself for about 5 minutes before settling down. it revs up to just over 2000rpm It did this since I have owned it, I'm told its normal. Its just since that guy worked on it that it doesn't really do it always anymore.

They have a cold start system which alters the fuelling on initial cold start up, but mine never idled at above 1000rpm, hot or cold.

My 1980 SC Sport Targa used to blip the throttle about six times before settling down to fast idle. The handbook said that you should start the car, and on no account touch the throttle pedal until it was at fast idle.

frank,
I'm guessing the 930 turbo has the same Warm up procedure as the 965 3.3,
On cold start, it should run rich and rev at around 1000 as john says, +/- 100 revs.
After just a few minutes it will drop to normal 750ish.
You don't need to sit stationary, but drive off smoothly/ normally, obviously no high revving until full operating temp.

If yours has a fluctuating idle or is much higher than the above figures then it needs seeing to.
Good luck.

Again, thanks for the replies
It does settle down to an idle of about 750 but it revs for at least 5 minutes maybe 10. I had the fuel tank out over the weekend. Cleaned a lot of grit out and changed the filter. There has been a notable improvement although I am still not back to the way she was. It started up almost normally( sounds like all cylinders now) When driving she is hesitating a lot, like fading when you put the boot down.
Also, she consistently refuses to start these days an hour or two after the engine has been up to temp. But the next day she will be fine( for the first start anyway) Starts no problem when she is still really hot. Any ideas?
