Engine warning light

Possibly a coil pack acting up. If it is I would drive that distance to my Indy but if in doubt use a recovery truck. Have you any AA/RAC or recovery cover under your car insurance?

Yep, coil pack most likely. It will be fine to drive 5 miles. I once had to drive 70-odd kilometers on only 5 cylinders after being advised to do so by Olaf Manthey & whilst painfully slow, it did no harm at all.

There are 101 things it could be, but it is pure guesswork without knowing the fault codes. However, if the CEL isn't flashing continuously, it is safe to drive (as shown in the handbook).

Having not used the car for 3 weeks or so, I took it for a short drive (4 miles) to charge the battery up. After about 3 miles the engine warning light came on with a message 'Go to workshop'. There was a noticeable loss of power and uneven sound from the engine. When I started the car again after 2 days the engine light flashed almost immediately and then stayed on.
I will ring my Indy in the morning, but I wondered whether any of the 'experts' on here have any ideas - I am particularly anxious to know whether it will be ok to drive (5 miles or so) to my Indy.
Thanks for any comments
Chris

Thanks guys for the comments. Yes Richard - I have just read in your book about the distinction between a flashing light and a constant one - money well spent ! Chris

Was it wet? If so check coil packs. Don't ignore the fault, bought our car second hand and must have had the error for a long time prior. Cost us a small fortune to fix the secondary faults

No, the car hasn't been out in the wet for a long time, but thanks for the comment. The car is going in to Indy tomorrow - on the phone he seemed to think it was coil pack or MAF, but as Richard says, until it goes on the diagnostic, it is guesswork.

You guys were absolutely right - problem fixed today - coil pack on cylinder 3 replaced and everything is back to normal. As an added bonus my Indy noticed a slight oil leak which I have been thinking was a RMS problem developing and was soon going to cost big money - but it was a 'chain tensioner sealing washer' ( ? ) and was fixed for a very reasonable sum at the same time. Yes, I lost the oil, but the car was due its annual check next month when I would have had an oil change anyway ! To celebrate, I took the roof down on the way back and went for a blast along the motorway ! Thanks again for your help. Chris
