Engine warning message

The 'check engine refer to workshop' message has popped up again. It happened a few weeks ago & my specialist (ex Porsche Andy Palmer in Birmingham) interrogated the car & found some weakness in two of the cylinders. He also said you can get false indications so reset the computer on the car to remove the message. Car's been fine for a few weeks & I have changed to super unleaded petrol (noticeably better running).

However, the warning message has returned so the car needs to go back for further investigation. Meantime, does anyone have any ideas?

You could try buying one of these which will take you as close you can get to the problem. Fixing the issue is another subject! These devices are great fun. You will need the associated software on your smartphone to access the data. It is an amazing revelation. ELM 327: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Moonar-Diagnostic-ELM327-Interface-Bluetooth/dp/B00BMHAILG

If you have an Android tablet with Bluetooth it works, better size screen to view. Should error codes and history. Probably wont give specifics on which cylinders are faulty. Torque from the Google Play Store is the software you need. Cheers,

Phillip, It's on the left lower dashboard area. This will give you an idea of its location: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zM4ysRb9uJU Jeff

Thanks all. Initially my technician thought it was the Airmass meter but eventually found it to be the Oil/Air Separator - from subsequent research this seems to be a common fault. Item replaced & with a couple of hours labour charged, the bill wasn't too bad. Car transformed so performance may have been falling off for a while.

Hi - happened to me this morning. Local garage plugged it in to diagnose and it came up with a problem in cylinder 2 and 4 - changing the coils in these 2 cylinders tomorrow (and whilst in there, the spark plugs as well), so will report on the result! Does make you wonder about the standard of fuel though as the engine management light came on after I had put some unleaded in - so maybe this caused a problem as it was ok on the short run to the garage before.

Hi again - you could tell the car wasn't running on all cylinders and it was juddery with a loss of power - wondered if you had those symptoms as well or just the light coming on.

I had CELs come on over a period of months. Fuel economy down, power down, and a vibration with occasional odd noises from behind, and the engine didn't sound like a sewing machine. It turned out to be a valve spring, which eventually let go, depositing the valve in the cylinder and stopping the engine, and leaving a piece of collet in the sump... The vibration and sound I think was the loose valve not letting number 1 cylinder breathe properly, the occasional stuttering piston-valve contact. If the coil packs and plugs are ok, then it's worth a quick look through the plug openings at the piston tops - signs of contact need to be investigated. Better a £2k bill for removal and check than more than double for a second hand engine and reinstallation...

Nigel Evans - yes the initial diagnosis showed some weakness on two of the cylinders but not of course the source of the problem. The oil/air separator failure caused poor running, excess pressure in the crankcase leading to oil in the inlet & smoke & the warning message. Worth getting your garage to look at this before replacing too many other parts - the oil/air separator cost me about £60 plus labour

Ok thanks for the information - the work I had done (and quickly by my garage) appears to have solved the problem and the car is running fine again.
