engine weight

From the manual: Engine Weight as per DIN 70020 A Manual - 203.7kg (with dual-mass flywheel) Tiptronic: 194.0kg I assume the Tip engine weight does not include the Torque Converter.

I'm just about to take the engine out and wanted to make sure I get the right engine stand.

I'm going to strip it and refresh it. Its at over 90,000 now so i'm going to do the engine and gearbox i think. There's nothing wrong as such, just feel its done well and don't want to be forced into it. Might do some tweaks while i'm at it too!

Hi Middy Sounds interesting, what have you got in mind and whats your budget? Of course there is the old addage - if its running OK dont mess with it. At 90,000 miles with nothing wronge as you state and if serviced regularly it should go on for many more trouble free miles its a big and powerfull reliable engine so sounds like a lot of wasted time, effort and cash just to have a play with the socket set. Never the less Middy - interested in your plans - do post and update us all, a few pics of how you get on and what you find will be interesting. Good luck!

Hi Mike, when rebuilding a motor you can't really have a plan or budget as you have no idea what will need replacing until you get in there and start measuring/looking etc. Preventative maintenance is far from a waste of my time, that I can assure you. Sure, will keep you updated while playing with my socket set and thanks for the advice. Pete

Hi middy, where do you live as I would like to offer free help in removing and stripping your engine. I am a ex jaguar car mechanic. Let me know if you are interested. Regards ray.

Hi, forgot to say in my pm reply to you that I think it would be a good idea to post any communication between ourselves on this forum as I am sure that Richard and co will all be keen to follow the open heart surgery that you are considering undertaking! Is this ok with you? Regards ray.

Hi Raybonnar I think you most definately must post every breathtaking step in the rebuild and include pictures too to appease the many armchair mechanics and part time experts so we can all enjoy the experience. Yes please. Thanks

If Peter is up for it, it sounds like a plan to me Ray. I would be happy to host any photos on the club server and send you links so you can put multiple photos in one post. Edit: If you are looking for an engine cradle, Alasdair (sulzeruk) was having some made for the 996, and were well priced.

Yup, that all sounds fine to me too. Just got to get a few things together. Ray, there are some special tools required which i've got to source, which is what am working on at the mo...

hi all, as middy and i have spoken about how he intends to proceed with his engine overhaul it became clear that he is much more qualified than me to carry out the work involved and i know that he will keep us all informed of his progress. as he will be in no rush to start/complete the work involved this will probably be the most anticipated posts ever to have been read on this 996 forum. wishing you middy the best of luck with your re-build and everyone who reads this post a merry christmas and all the best for the coming year. ray.
