Has anyone out there got any answers for an annoying whine that is proportional to engine speed particularly from idle to 2k rpm.
We have already changed the thrust bearing and dual mass flywheel
and also the 2 belt tensioning pulleys and water pump!! All of these showed wear but the noise hasn't been fixed .
Please help my wallet is emptying fast!

Try turning off the AC. Mine makes a backgroud whine seems to vary depending on how hard the AC is working.

I've found the whining stops if I take the missus out of the car....um, she can't get on here to read this can she....?

+1 on the AC pump.
I discovered that when the AC on my C2 runs lowish on gas, the whine happens when the AC is on & immediately disappears when turned off.
The noise is most noticeable at idle, before other noises drown it out.
It seems a great warning to get it topped up - as long as you know !
The first time it happened I thought the worst & even the AC "expert" didn't believe me until he heard it for himself.
As soon as the system was re-pressurised the noise disappeared totally - with AC on or off !
