Engine will not rev

I have a 2.7 Boxster year 2000. When driving it Saurday it did not feel quite right but i was not to worried. When I came to drive it on Monday it would not rev past 2500 rpm but then after 5 minuts the revs picked up and it was running fine so i went to work. 1 hour later i went and tryed it and again it would not rev past 2500 rpm so i called out a mobile mechanic he said there was no diagnostic fault and that my fuel filter was blocked so i changed my fuel filter and no difference still would not rev. So i thought limp it home and then it starting working ok got home fine turned off the ignition and back on again and then again would not rev. Starts fine and ticks over fine. Thanks. Mark

Can you elaborate on what you mean by not reving past 2500?

Is it a case of hitting 2500 and just holding there constantly? (physically won't go further)
Is the rev limiter kicking in at the wrong level? (you should hear that)
Is it getting to 2500 and then controlling itself so that i'ts like sitting at tick-over - whereby you'll see the needle fluctuate slightly as the EMS keeps it constant?

With your foot flat on the accelerator it gently revs up to 2500 rpm and runs smoothly but will not go any higher as if it was in some kind of saft mode if it has one and then all of a sudden it will start to work fine and will then continue to do so until you turn the ignition off.

MAF.
Try disconnecting the electrical connection on the MAF, Start up and the engine will opperate in limited strategy mode - not quite perfect but very near approximates, If this corrects your problem replace the MAF, If not then you have ruled that part out.

I did this with a 996 and it turned out to be the MAF.
