Hi can you help please has the 2.7 cayman got the same engine as the boxster if so i presume its got the problems as well many thanks for any replies

Err, well yes and no ... as the Boxster has had various iterations of the 2.7 engine, whereas the Cayman has only had the latest 245 bhp version, so you need to be more specific.

"the 2007 Boxster engine has since been upgraded and is now on even terms with the Cayman." sorry if i wasnt specific enough[:D] i assumed we were all aware of the various gradual upgrades from the 2.5 at inception,to the equality that the above piece refers to hope that clarifies

Hi Boltman, Yes John is correct, only the latest version of the 2.7 engine was fitted to the Cayman. What is you interest, are you llooking at buying a second hand one? Let us know we may be able to offer some guidance in that direction.

Our Boxster 2.7 has the 228bhp engine. It needed a Rear Main Seal at 30,000 miles, but despite the horror stories it isn't really that expensive (even at an OPC) and you can take the opportunity to drop a new clutch in at the same time. Not sure whether the newer engines still suffer from this though. Perhaps someone could clarify as I'm in the market for a Cayman to keep our 986 company.

Mike, I'm not too sure myself.....I havent heard of any such problems on Caymans, but we are still a few in number, my suggestion would be to pose the same question on the boxster forum, as in the last 18months - 2 years, they have had the same spec engines, and perhaps have sold in bigger numbers, hence more information available.

This came up on the CaymanClub website, and Robin from Autofarm posted the following ... We have been rebuilding Porsche engines in the UK with IMS failures for some time now. Here's some info that may prove useful to you: [link=http://www.autofarm.co.uk/engines/water_cooled/shaft_tech]Autofarm Intermediate Shaft Tech[/link] In our experience, since the upgraded M97 (997, 987, 987C) engine replaced the M96 (996, 986) there has been minimal issues with IMS failures. This may also be due to the fact that the majority of these cars are still within the dealer network under warranty, but we have heard no problems on the grapevine. All caymans have an engine no. starting M97 (M97/21 for an S and M97/20 for a 2.7). The majority of failures concern engines starting M96. The Cayman is a much more reliable motor.
