Enthusiastic cooling fan

Hi all,

the radiator cooling fan on my car has been staying on, at the low speed, even when I take the keys out and leave the car.

I came back earlier and it had been running for hours after the car had been parked up.

To stop the battery dying, I reached up to the 'switch' screwed into the radiator and pulled one of the wires off. This stopped the fan.

Anyone know what the likely problem is? There's a stupidly-big 80s style relay in the fuse box that also stopped the fan when I pulled it- anyone else had this problem?

:)

I've had this before, the radiator switch sticks on but when the keys are removed it doesn't stop the fan. IIRC with the keys out the system is still operational via a shunt resistor which makes the fan barely audible and your battery go flat. I posted a thread on here called 'The timing belt cover is eating my arm' which detailed the problem including the epic battle i had fitting the new radiatior fan switch...which resulted in the timing belt cover devouring my forearm.

You may find you need to go and buy a 30mm deep (hexagonal) impact socket to get the switch out, it's well hidden and on the nearside edge of the radiator right at the top, i got mine from Halfords. Fit the new one with a sliver of gasket paste on the threads as mine now has an incurable leak from the new switch and i'm not going through the performance of getting it out again!

Oh lord, I thought it may be a struggle to get at!!

Mine has the added complication of the 16v airbox etc (which obvioulsy I can remove easily enough) but access doesn't look good.

Was yours fixed with a new switch? I may try and get a relay too!
