Eratic Speedometer

I have a 1989 2.7 automatic. Last night on a short trip I noticed that the speedometer needle was swinging eratically from approximately the real speed to zero and back - sometimes settling at zero for a little while. The odometer seemed to be working correctly and both had been working earlier in the day on a 60 mile trip.

Any pointers to where to start looking.- the voltage reading is steady at about 13 volts and no apparent problems starting. The headlights were on dipped beam with again no apparent problems.

Are there any UK firms that can refurbish VDO speedometers - I know there are companies that refurbish the old/classic magnetic units.

Many thanks for any input

I would go with the sender if it was just your speedo. Faults with the dash tend to make all the needles in the dash twitch and flick or they did in my old red turbo.

Definately (well, almost) the plug on the wire to the sender (above n/s driveshaft) is full of crap and needs a good clean.

Many thanks for the input. I will check the sender once the weather brightens up and the ground dries out.
