Erm... Costly!

Good morning what a weekend, I order a new rear view mirror from my local Porsche garage and was rather pleased, as now looking back it won't look like there is a severe earthquake happening, however like all old things my little 944 is begining to cost money! So far I have had a head rebuild, and a few other bits and bobs, and yep after changing the gearbox oil, it has been found that I still have a rather noisey box and the whinning noise is just getting louder. So After going to Autostrasse (garage) it is thought that my torque tube bearings are knackered! and will have to be replaced, So thinking that the box has done a good 115K I am thinking of having the whole lot rebuilt, therefore does anyone know any good gearbox specialists, or is it more cost effective to buy a recon box. Also looking at various posts it seems that people have also actually used a S2 box instead of the Lux, what sort of advantages does this present?

I can only be of limited help here, but your car has the 016J/5Y gearbox and an S2 with no LSD has the 016J/ASG; the 016J means they are the same basic gearbox (with the same ratios according to the manual but Clarks shows them as slightly different). I have to say I would probably stick to the Lux box personally, and bearing in mind a friend's recent experience with a rebuild I should think a recon box could easily amount to the same or less outlay.

Thankyou for the link that is pretty helpful, I am currently getting costings on either a rebuild or a recon box, if I decided to do the recon route, what advantages would there be for getting the LSD option, and I presume that it would be compatable with my current setup, 88 2.5 8v?
Kind regards
Chris
