Erratic temp gauge

My temp gauge on my 2.9 987.2 2010 has been acting up recently. After driving for a while it falls to zero and the red light flashes. After a while or on restart it works again. Anyone had a similar problem and what was the issue? Thanks

Gut feeling is a poor earth or poor / dirty connection to the sender on the engine.

Been though a similar issue on my old 911, but feel the principle is the same. simple things first.

No idea where the sender is, but google could help or a trip to your local indie specialist.

check your coolant level. Flashing light is an indicator of low coolant level but that is typically accompanied by a dashboard message.

Assuming that is ok I would be thinking coolant temp sensor failing. I can’t find the reference but I am sure i have read that the fashking light and the guage at zero is an indicator of sensor failure - also - as per handbook - the light flashes if there is an engine compartment fan failure - again I would expect a dash board message - but....

if you are near anyone with any diagnostic tools that are “porsche smart” then you may see a stored code in the system.

Hi, I had the same experience on my 2003 986, and it turned out that the thermostat was stuck open. Also had a new sensor fitted at the same time.
