Ok guys and gals, what's the score when it comes to that sad passtime of waving to other drivers? Having owned TVRs and Lotus' (Lotii?) in the past, we've always been very chummy and acknowleged anything the marque has produced.

However, I already detect some snobbery from the 911 and Boxter brigade who I notice don't even appear to look in my direction. True enough I don't gesture at them either (well maybe afterwards and then only with the 'Nescafe shake'), but I do look to see of there is a hint of recognition as they pass me by. All I seem to see are scowly faces implying that I shouldn't be sharing the tarmac with them.

However, thanks to the guy in the 928 in Redhill (must've been stolen) last week, who gave me a wave. I could tell he wasn't sure whether to or not and neither was I, but we both tentatively raised some digits (more than 2).

Come on Fen, let's be havin your pearls of wisdom!

Oh no - not this again! [:'(]

I think we've pretty much established before that ENTHUSIASTS wave, but many others would hardly recognise another Porsche from a Hyundai (if it hit them).

15 years ago, the sort of people that don't care about the car, but have to have a Porsche to show how flash they are, were driving 944's. Now those 944's are owned by enthusiasts.[:)]

There are a small number of enthusiasts driving Boxsters and 996/7's currently, and if you don't acknowledge them (by your own admission) then how are you going to find those enthusiasts?

Personally I only wave at other 944's. I get about 1 in 5 waving back and I imagine the same percentage again possibly would but didn't react in time. The hit ratio between 911s was much higher in my experience with over half of them waving. Back then even new 911's were still owned by enthusiasts though.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]To be honest (and sorry Mark and the other Bogster owners who venture in here) it'll be a cold day in Hell before I wave at Boxsters or 996/997s.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

Didn't mean to diss those who are enthusiasts Mark. It was more of a tongue in cheek few lines of drivel (bit bored watching Villa v Liverpool). I do however feel that the emphasis is as much on the owners of the newer cars to show their knowledge and history of the marque and not just their wads. I was always keen as the owner of a newer TVR for example to show those with the Wedges and S's that I knew what the cars were, even though they were perhaps viewed as poorer stock.

You're correct that the emphasis should be on me to try and detect those enthusiasts with the more expensive brands. Besides which, I'd be mortified if I didn't wave and got caught out. Can't really see it happening though!

I wave at everyone, especially the laydeees [;)] but find you get a much higher return if you flash the lights too. We are all so busy concentrating on avoiding cameras these days taht it is hard to spot fellow porschephiles

They all tend to report me to the police though [:(]

I wave at any and every Porsche that I spot in time. That's not all of them, though. Sometimes I instinctively wave before I realise I'm in the BMW. [&:]

Most return waves come from cars pre 996 & 986, I have to admit. Some of those wave back, though mainly those not in a suit. It seems to be declining - it's almost as if more waved back last time we were discussing this! [:D]

Never had a reply from a 997, though. [;)]

In the 944 , I wave at any front engined Porsche ( excluding Cayenne ) and pre 993 911's , 996/Boxster/997 etc as mentioned by Mark will mainly be owned by people wanting the badge not the heritage/anorak/enthusiast and in my early days I did wave but found it a pointless exercise ... I just looked a prat.

However I have passed a 996 virtually daily for the past 2 years in Preston , and I always have a glance in the 944 but nothing, this morning I went passed in the 993 and she flashed ... I just ignored her [8D]

I give them a quick flutter of the headlights if I have time.[:D]

Does that make me a sad git? [8|]

I wave to all Boxster drivers...but only when I am driving the hand painted Hammerite Astra van (with no hub caps)[:D]

We passed a red 944 last night on the M3. Claire gave them a wave as we went past, we were in the Boxster.

Me "Any reaction?"
Claire "He looked a bit confused..."

Claire "He looked a bit confused..."

I once had a Boxster return a wave and my look was probably deemed to be confused , I almost crashed the car , I hope the driver of the 944 survived the experience [:)]
