Excessive play in gear stick

I just noticed a problem with the gear stick today - when I am in gear, there is a lot of left-right movement in the gear stick. The car stays in gear and I have no problem finding all 5 gears every time (and reverse where needed), but it just feels wrong.

Could this be a simple problem with a worn gear linkage, or am I better off replacing the whole gear-shift mechanism at the transaxle? Maybe this will give me a damn good excuse to fit a short-shifter! [:D]

I think there's a thread on this already, but I'd say get yourself a new linkage fitted - at the transaxle end. This will tighten things up considerably.

Jon Mitchell does a proper replacement for the worn gearlever, see here:

Thanks Paul - no wonder why I couldn't find the thread...never thought to search for "sloppy" on the threads!

I replaced the linkage above the gearbox and the socket/ball item below the lever all with OEM parts and its still a bit like that ('sloppy') even now. It is vastly better though.

I was looking for some instructions on how to swap out the gear lever/linkages, but haven't found anything yet. Can someone please point me in the right direction?

The gear lever is easy to take apart.
First unsecure the black plastic that holds the gearknob onto the central console. Take your time in order not to break it.
Remove the clip that holds the gearknob onto the gearlever.
Remove the clip that holds the gear linkage to the gearlever
Remove the two screws that holds the socket of the gearlever on the torque tube. Beware of not letting these two fall down or get lost in the sound-deadening foam.
Hope this helps.

I have exactly the same problem and have got the replacement exchange part from Jon, will be swapping this weekend before I explore the rear linkage.

great service from JM by the way, ordered by phone and next day delivery

Cool I'd love to hear how you get on...this might be a bit cheeky of me, but if you're in the mood to grab the camera, feel free to take some photos of the work! [:D]
