hi can anyone give me advice i have a 944s2 1990 when i was driven the exclamation mark lite up on my dash when i turned the engine off then back on it didnt come back on iam getting mixed messages about this so can i have your advice please thanks dave[8|][&:]

i am pretty useless with any spannering but it sounds like a break sensor warning but i am maybe incorrect,,,,,jasonp

You'd usually get something else too, along with the main exclamation mark. Was there? This will guide towards what was wrong. The handbrake applied brings up the EM as well as the brake sign for instance. Anything else to guide us?

Sounds like an ABS related fail. It illuminates when you start to drive off. If it's not illuminated at start up but then shortly comes on after moving then it'll likely be that. You may need some patience with the fault finding.

If it was an ABS fault then the ABS light would remain lit. I really think as said something simples like your handbrake switch (and believe me they aren't very good) or your brake fluid level is a little low and just operated the switch going round a corner or uphill.

When my ABS pump failed, the light illuminated on moving. It wasn't lit when starting the engine - only on moving.

Agreed. It should light when ignition is turned on then extinguish when the engine starts. The system performs a self test when the wheels start moving. You can hear the pump cycling. But if the fault is specifically ABS then the ABS light specifically should remain lit. You could be right but as said again more detail is needed from OP. Any other associated lights?

Oil level checked?

+1, My light came on once when the oil was 1/2 way down the dipstick.
I'd guess this too. They seem to be more sensitive to low oil levels (i.e. turning the warning light on when the level isn't at minimum) as they get older. My theory is that the oil level float in the sump sinks slightly with age so gives a lower reading than true.

Oli.

thanks to everyone it was the oil level i topped it up and the light has gone out at the same time i have put some denso iridium spark plugs in and it has cured the lumpy tickover

In that case check the bulb for the oil warning light as that should have come on as well as the ! mark (bottom of the fuel/temp gauge). It should come on with the ignition on but not the engine as part of the test pre start.

I thought that was only low oil pressure related (though could very well be wrong).

The low engine oil level light ("engine oil" with a dipstick) + central warning light will not come when engine is running. Only after engine has been stopped and then started. It will then remain lit until the condition is rectified. Often comes on when half full then you park on a slope or after a quick shutdown and restart where the oil has not fully drained back to the sump.
