Exhaust advise

Coming back from LeMans last year my car developed an oil leak. I didn't know at the time but when I arrived home and cleaned the car up I was shocked to find my newly powder coated engine fan re-decorated in a dirty shade of grey from oil spray. After cleaning the engine up I narrowed the leak down to either the Temp sender or Pressure Sender unit at the front of the engine. I changed the cheaper unit first (temp sender) which given the 50/50 chance of being right obviously proved to be the wrong choice. Now my problems start. The car has AirCon and after removing the compressor to get to the Pressure Sender unit, I quickly realised that the mounting bracket has not going to be a straight forward removal. I had my fears confirmed when speaking to Kev at Classic Car Workshop who said, yep, exhaust off and engine jacked up. Only way to get at the front bolts that hold on the bracket! That's not that bad apart from the fact that I know as soon as my exhaust is touched its just going to disintergrate into a pile of brown rust powder. So finally, my questions are - The back box (4 yr old - mild steel) and Heat Exchangers (stainless but could be original) look in good nick, its my cross over pipe and pre-silencer that look knackered. Do I go for stainless or mild steel parts? Do I get a by-pass pipe or another pre-silencer (not bothered about the noise level). Do I get a one or two piece cross over? Just want some pointers from you guys (or gals) that have already changed these parts but stayed with a std back box and exchangers. Many thanks.

Spooky! My 3.2 developed an oil leak at Le Mans in 2005!! Some very helpful PCGB members helped me locate the leak to the low oil level sender. I removed it at Le Mans and used areldite to plug the leak and drove home happily with the red light on but the level gauge working!

I changed my stock exhaust for Dansk headers and Cargraphic pre-silencer and back box. Loved the Cargraphic stuff but I always kinda regretted not saving up some more funds and going for the SSI headers.

Choice of materials is a personal decision based on cost against longevity. If I remember correctly, the one piece cross over pipe will not fit without dropping the header/heat exchanger (anybody else know for sure?). So if you don't want to disturb them go for the two piece version.

Cheers. I'll ask the lady (yes - that's right) who service's my car for her opinion when we can see the full system properly when up on ramps. Reckons I can go to about Gbp 600.00
Ps, anybody had any epxierence with the back box by-pass that Design 911 are selling for around Gbp 60.00. It bolts striaght onto the pre-silencer and does away with the back box altogether. Reckons that would sound good if not a tad loud. Not sure it would pass an MOT though. Anybody ever fitted one of these?

Hi Mark. Can you tell us where thats located? is it just below the temp sender unit on the front of the engine?

Hi antony

I changed the middle box on my car for a straight through one. I bought a steel one from type 911 .
Its been on the car for 2 years ,wound't say it was any louder .
The question about centre pipe you do have to remove the heatexchanger if you want a new single pipe.

Hope this helps

That back box by pass makes a big difference to noise. I asked someone on here before about that ! I am going to try my car without that silencer though when my silencer turns to dust. If I can stand the noise I will get the bypass.

I'm selling a Stainless Steel Dansk Sports back box with a single 84mm outlet. Nice sound - loud but not chavster loud if you know what I mean. I had it on my Targa for a few months, but I'm selling the Targa now so I put the original box back on.

Sorry Nathan - it went suprisingly quickly! I do love RSR's.. It's a b*gger getting wheels for them though.
