Evening all to those not at Le Mans - couple of odd sounds that I have only noticed since a bit of nice weather - windows down and the stereo off !! , the exhaust has quite a rattle but only at low speeds - seems to be functioning find and looks fine and doesnt seem at all loose but is quite a loud rattle like its vibrating up and down ! , the second has just started when the steering is turned at low speeds it sounds like paper rubbing together inside the car ! , any ideas as Im a complete novice but learning bit by bit.

Cheers
Chris

Hi Chris

The noises you describe could be associated with the ceramics inside the catalytic converter breaking down and rattling around inside the casing and the other noise might be the power steering, apparently this is a common problem and usually occurs on hard lock when reversing. On the other hand I might be talking a load of rubbish. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: Im sure others on this forum will be able to offer more advice.

Cheers Kev, Cat and Power Steering doesnt sound to clever ! oh and yep dont we all suffer from dam seagull problems [:D][:D]

Can't comment on the cat except to say that no 944 legally needs one so you can bin it. If you want to keep one and your's is cream-crackered then I could be persuaded to part with the one my cab.

The usual power steering noise is not so much like paper rubbing than a howling whic we think is a resonance in the pipes and nothing to worry about. Paper rubbing could be the wheel scuffing the plastic shroud very lightly as you turn it.

As an aside I'm going to remove the PAS complete from my Turbo, so again if anyone wants the bits I seem to be rivalling Simon Buterworth at the moment!

See if your local exhaust place can identify the rattle with the engine running and up on a ramp. It might just be a loose or rusty heat shield around the cat. I just pulled mine off when it started to go, but don't park over extremely long and dry grass []

The grating noise 'could be' the brass contacts behind the steering wheel for the horn push. A small drop of oil where the wheel joins the shaft cured my grating noise

Cheers Fen and Paul, yep will get the car on the ramp early next week to establish the probs , the paper grinding sound from the steering is just that ! - I can see a small part of cardboard between the steering wheel and the dash and it is basically rubbing - no idea what it is their for but Im going to have a go at taking the steering wheel off and then establishing quite what it is their for . Sure you guys know ! [:D]

Yeah it is odd , it can clearly be seen and that is def the noise ! , attending the R18 Meeting tonight, might get their early take off the steering wheel and have a fiddle about - if I mess it up half a chance of getting a life back [:D][:D] of a fellow 944 member - it was good when I attended my first meet last month in that another 3 944 owners where there and all very pleasant.

Car booked in for tommorow to have the exhaust looked at .

I meant get a lift back maybe life back wasnt to far wide of the mark in the first place [:D][:D]
