Exhaust centre box 'noise'

I have this strange, slightly annoying resonating sound coming from the are directly below the gear stick. Its seems to be more noticeable once its warmed up. There's no blowing from the exhaust as its been checked on a ramp and the noise is there when stationary and relates directly to engine revs. Its sound like an exhaust 'blow' but isn't.

Any idea what it could be, the centre box is a stainless steel one and looks in good condition and is also secure.

It could be the innards of the silencer falling to bits or possibly one of the heat shields is loose and touching something it shouldn't be?

I couldn't feel anything loose but I may just remove it and check that it hasn't fallen apart inside!

I had two annoying rattles, one from the left of the gearstick and one from underneath.

The one from the left I just ignored, as it was the missus! [:D]

The rattle coming from underneath was due to a worn balljoint cup (small white plastic bush) that the bottom of the gearstick sits/pivots in. Obviously nothing to do with the exhaust but could this be the cause of your resonation?

Hi Mike, I very recently replaced the white bush under the gear stick. The car is suprisingly rattle free, just this resonating noise to sort out!

I have the same with mine. Apparently some Dansk exhausts don't fit quite right and hit the heat shield. Whether that's true or not I don't know, but the exhaust is not that old, and otherwise fine.

I think it is a Dansk. Maybe a removal and refit may just sort it out!

Today I had a quick look at the centre box but didn't crawl under the car. Using a pry bar I gently moved the centre box and whilst doing so I could see the gear stick moving, so it appears the box is fouling the gear linkage and the noise will be resonating through that. After giving it a wiggle the resonating noise stopped. Just need to wait for some time to get up the ramps to sort it properly [&:]
