Exhaust clamps

On the cat joints I'm told that the clearance holes corrode or fret so usual kind of wear on such a joint the studs may need knocking out and bolts fitting, it's the most common exhaust joint fault and in a tight working space behind the wheel but clearly visible, I would expect some kind of insert ring and you should be able to find the PET for the Cayman Gen2 2.9 on the Porsche Cars GB Site.

Corroded yes, but are they split? If they are not broken do they really need changed?

I'm sure most caymans will have corrosion to some extent on their clamps.

I've been advised that my 2009 Gen 2 2.9 Cayman exhaust clamps and fittings are corroded, including the flange (joint?) between the exhaust system and catalytic converter, and that the full system should be separated (excluding removal of exhaust manifolds) and resealed with new clamps and fittings. Is there anything particularly difficult involved in carrying out that work or should it be within the capability of a competent home mechanic? This is my first Porsche but I've always done my own maintenance on previous cars.

If it's a Porsche Centre who are recommending the work, I'm sure that there's an element of them looking for work. As Archie says, corrosion will always be present on the exhaust system clamps and fittings.

At least they're not recommending removing the manifolds which, I understand, can be time-consuming since the studs often shear.

Thank you for your replies. It was not an OPC but an independent who advised that the work be done - There was no mention of any splits and they said it isn't urgent but should be done as a preventative measure to avoid damage/loss of the exhaust. Cost would be £600 +VAT but I've no idea how that breaks down regarding parts/labour. I suppose I really ought to get the car up on the ramps to have a look for myself.

 
For comparison I had my rear boxes removed and replaced with a Carnewal system by a local exhaust centre and they charged me £100. The cat to rear box nuts had nearly completely corroded away, these were the most time consuming part of the job, the rest was quite simple.

I provided the two new gaskets bought from Porscheshop, the clamps for the T piece I bought some Mikalor marine quality clamps, the Porsche ones always corrode away.

Thanks for the link and details of your exhaust change Tony.

It sounds as though the job could be done for less than the £600 quoted, especially if I do it. I'll probably look into it more closely in the autumn/winter.

Possibly not. I think the garage were proposing to leave the manifolds in place but to remove and replace the rest of the system which I would expect to include the gasket between the manifold and cat, and the clamps (looks like 3 or more on the image below) for the tail pipe, they may have mentioned replacing rusty bolts and mountings too.

As I said I'll have a look for myself in a couple of months, from the image below it doesn't look as though it should be too difficult.
