Exhaust cross-over pipe

Hi folks. In the middle of re-building the exhaust on my SC, pretty much standard other than I am fitting a Dansk sport pre silencer, my quandry is this, the cross-over pipe comes in two pieces with a seal washer and seal ring and two part clamp to fit around the joint, when the seal ring is fitted does the washer fit on the outside of the joint or on the inside between the ring and the other section of pipe??
