Exhaust differences?

I'm sure i've read somewhere that the exhaust back-box on early 924's should have round chrome tips/exit pipes whereas the later 924's had the oval shape.
Does anyone know if there's any performance or other design diferences between the two and can the oval type be fitted to an early model?

Could be wrong , but believe the oval type back box is for the exhaust system associated with the 2.7l 924S.
Don't think it will fit the earlier type of system, but then willing to be proved wrong if you have suitable cutting / welding gear!

If you look down the "spout" of the 2.5 litre box you will be staring into blackness but do the same to the 2.0 litre oval tailpipe and you will see baffles, as they are of different internal construction.
If you look closely at the oval tail pipe silencer of the 924 you may see the large weld close to the box underneath, where the oval trim is attached to the silencer; I believe that an oval trim was avialable for the round pipe. I don't have PET on this pc. let me check the part numbers and I will post. I suspect that, inline with Porsche's continuous improvement poilcy the oval pipe will fit but you will most likely have to buy the front silencer as well, as I believe that the round pipe is a one peice up to the downpipe flange, whereas the oval pipe terminated so that either a catalytic converter could be fitted for the US or a second box for ROW.

I have just been out to look at the rear exhaust section for a 924Lux,which I happen to keep in one of my pattern stores(as you do!).This is a complete section starting with a 50mm OD slip(over) pipe joint, then a fairly short round silencer followed by the the cranked pipe to bring the line to the nearside followed by the oval rear silencer. All pipe so far is round;the rear silencer then has a short round outlet immediately becoming oval to the stainless trim end. This is a welded up section.I also have the long round silencer that precedes this and fits up into the transmission tunnel, this is a separate silencer to which the downpipe piece attaches.Anybody wanting these parts is welcome;the silencer is unused, the rear assembly part used.Am I offered £50?.

I have just looked on the PET cd and the oval tailppipe box is for 5 speed transmissions, which is larger and has different mounts. A trim for the round pipe is listed.

Thanks for the info chaps - my martini has the oval type but 4-speed tranny.I have a replacement round pipe type which i'll add to the list of jobs to be done.
