Exhaust Heat Shield - Is it Required ?

Hi,
Developed a rattle rear left - turns out small exhaust heat shield has worked loose due to corrosion. Rattle got worse and when I managed to get my head under the car discovered that shield was completely free from mountings. Managed to remove shield - so no more rattle :)
Trying to find out if I need to replace shield ? Have read in a couple of forums that it serves no purpose but find that strange as I would have thought that Posrche have fitted it for a reason.

Porsche-Apart are always very usefull, however why dont you just leave them off?

They are fitted because catalysts get very hot, and should you be parking on dry grass or over combustable material - like when you off road in it ???? there is a possiblity that those combustable materials could ignite - another over the top Health and safety initiative. (see quote below)
Not seen tarmac or concrete ignite yet so iguess its pretty safe to leave them orf.

Those that can, do - those that cant, teach - those that cant do either are H&S officers or auditors - and all the rest are chaplains

Nice idea Glyn, but the heat shields are above the catalytic converters, not underneath.
Or have I misunderstood?
