Exhaust Help please ? Is this correct

Here's one for the 3.2 owners out there....

I am fettling the car for the upcoming year have found something strange. See picture.

As you might be able to make out, if you look @ the bottom of the 2 exhaust entries into the pre-silencer looks somewhat flattened / kinked.

I thought it might be to provide clearance to the lower shock mounting, but not too sure. I have had 2 opinions and they are diametrically opposed ! Both from trusted sources.

1) It's normal - correct
2) "Mine is not like that"

So, any chance you might be able to have a look under your 3.2 and let me know if the bottom pipe if round or somehow oval ?

THANKS..

Steve

hi Steve,

well mine isn't like that nor are any that I have seen. looks suspiciously like someone had trouble with the shock lower mount and used a large hammer on it and 'slipped' All the curves (even the tight ones) are normally smooth and rounded with no flats. Sorry, that's not what you wanted to hear.. Cheers

The presilencer on my SC is not like that looks like yours has been flattened. If the presilencer is the same as a SC I got mine from Malton cars about £140 pretty easy to fit.
There is also a bloke who has them to sell on a regular basis on E-bay I got a cross over pipe from him and it was fine.

Hmmm... I have now seen a picture of the pre-silencer elsewhere, and indeed the bottom pipe entry to the flange is oval, but not like mine.

It's been like it for a long time, so I suspect that it's not doing too much harm.

Thanks for the update Bazgillie

Mine's the same as yours - but it should'nt be. Mine had new shocks fitted by a well known independant just before I bought it and it looks like the mechanic got a bit carried away with his hammer to! The cars done 10,000 miles since and it doesn't seem to have caused any problems. Sorry, again not the answer you wanted to know!

Mine is the same as yours. I was told "they are all like that". JZM and JAZ both said nothing to worry about. I guess some are and some aren't though. Seems too many are for it to be just a case of a slip of a BFH during a shock change.

Just ditch the lot and get SSIs and a remap [;)]

I got a piece of information from a very reliable source - the flat is there to allow the shock to be removed.

If you try to remove the shock from it's lower mounting without this flat, then it would be much harder. In X-section terms, the lower "oval" is much the same as the upper pipe, but just a different shape.

Thanks to all the folks who helped me save yet more £.

Steve

P. . - yes Richard I'd like to junk the whole lot and go SSI etc...but this will have to wait until it no longer functions - the car is plenty quick enough for it's (current) application !

Just had my mot and now attacking my cat (pre-silencer) with the air chisel to replace with a specialist cars stainless affair! Loads of room under there so why the big "flats"?New mot, lot's of sunny days ahead, wahoo!
