Exhaust Help

Hi all,

The last couple of weeks Porsche ownership have started to hurt my wallet, after a rear tyre shredding itself on the motorway, the exhaust has decided it's had enough as well - not yet looked at it in enough detail to see there is any obvious damage from the wheel incident but assume it may just have reached it's natural end ..... So I rang my local OPC for a quote

After scraping my chin back off the floor having been quoted £2,300 plus fitting to replace the two rear boxes on my 2006 Boxster (2.7) I am looking for significantly cheaper options!!

They are going to ring me back as they apparently offer a sports exhaust that would be better value.

Having had a bit of a google one of the Porsche specialists local to me is offering a Remus exhaust system - is this any good? Comes in about a grand in total.

Also found this on ebay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-987-Cayman-Boxster-Cat-Back-Version-Stainless-Exhaust-System-/121125235983?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3APorsche%7CPlat_Gen%3A987&hash=item1c33a06d0f

Made by TopGear in the UK which is £600.

Both of the above claim to be stainless steel etc etc

What would people go for ? I am not interested in making the car go quicker or sound excessively loud i just need an exhaust that doesn't make it sound like an old tank!!

Budget is max £1K as apart from the two tyres for the rear I have just had to shell out for a major service.

Cheers

My experience with alternative exhausts has not been altogether succesful. Noise is the main issue. Watch that they use the same suspension points in order to ensure noise remains isolated from the structure. An alternative may be a second hand exhaust from flea bay? My original exhaust on my 2.7 did around 120k miles in 12 years with a short time off when I tried a sports exhaust which I changed back for the original on noise grounds. I found that at normal cruising speeds of 50-70 mph there was a harsh noise/vibration through the cabin which made the car very wearing to drive.

Hi Simon,

That's exactly what I am afraid of - how easy it to get the exhaust off the car? Thinking I might take it off and get it checked over by an engineering company I use and see what they can do.

I checked ebay and there are 3 used genuine Porsche exhausts coming up that I can see varying in price depending whether they are for a Cayman or Boxster etc - I assume these exhausts are all the same given the Cayman is a Boxster with a roof!! (Apologies to Cayman owners there). Or do they differ in some subtle but crucial way.

Thanks

Paul

From scrabbling around under the car this evening it would appear the exhaust would be very easy to remove from the car as the 3 nuts are missing from the joint between the front and rear sections of it.

Hopefully it will be a case of getting the nuts from Porsche and getting my local mechanic to put it up on a ramp.

Anyone seen this happen before?

Car has been OPC maintained since new - no idea why it would have been undone at any point though.
