I am considering haveing a pse fitted to my 2004 40th anniversary 996 however on speaking to tony wright at wrightune he has done a similar mod useing the existing system, apparently several of you have had this done the question is is the sound a definite improvement and is it on par with the pse.

You can either get Tony to make one (if he is willing - the quality is excellent) or buy one on Ebay (Oettle make them - do a search for 996 sports exhaust)
I have the Oettle version (at around £280+shipping at the time). It is a copy of the pre-facelift model's sports exhaust. It is not the same as the facelift models sports exhaust.
Over stock it is in a different league. Fantastic, and very good value for money.
Compared to the facelift PSE I'd say it was 8/10 of the way there. The 'Copy' doesn't come on song until around 3k (can be a good thing), whearas the PSE starts from the get go.
The 'Copy' has less of a bark when warm than the PSE does..the PSE is basically a bit more of a beast (in a good way)
But at 4 times the price, I'd much rather have the 'Copy'

Another positive from me. Like Rod, I went for the cheapo option, but don't regret it one bit - I couldn't really justify £1500 for the genuine article. Also agree with 80% of the effect for 20% of the price. Tony modified a new pair of silencers I bought on eBay.

I think the concern with the Oettle silencers is that you might get a pair of 3.4 silencers and fit them on a 3.6 (they are different internally). I believe Porsche say you can fit 3.6's on a 3.4, but not the other way around. If you have your originals modified you won't have that problem.

Thanks guys i must admit i am inclined to go with tonys modifiction as i am utilizeing existing hardware at considerably reduced cost to the pse i,ll let you know how i get on.

Best interested in this myself - has anyone got a sound clip / video that they can post? (The one on the Ebay ads isn't great)
Also, can I ask how much Wrightune charge to modify the existing pipes?

This is the video file from Oettle's web site: http://www.oettle-autodienst.de/mediapool/50/504167/videos/996_BYPASSANLAGE_STUFE_1.wmv. Watch it to the end, as there is a drive-by shot.

You can (almost) guarantee you will need a set of 4 new exhaust clamps, as the old ones rust horribly. The clamps are about £30 a set, and the mod costs about £250 including other materials. It takes about 4-5 hours to remove the old boxes, drill and weld in the bypass pipes, and refit. Reckon on about £300 total. The Oettle silencers ready-done are around £300, but you would still need the clamps and a couple of hours for fitting - Probably £110 ish.

One thing to bear in mind if you're planning to take the car to a track day is the noise level. Does Tony have an idea of what it is for his conversion? the oettle one on ebay suggests 105 dB which is higher than many tracks allow for static levels (c. 98 dB)

I know Tony hasn't taken any measurements, but I expect it would be the same as Oettle.

This might solve the problem. A photo I stole from Tool Pants.

(and NO, I'm not serious)

Hi all

This may seem like a stupid question yuo most of you , but this is my first post. I am also looking at fitting a sports exhaust and certainly like the idea of the Oettle one. However I have 2 questions:
1. The say on the website that everything fun is ileagal, which implies that their exhaust is (sound level I assume). What are your thoughts?
2. Where would you recommend I have the exhaust fitted, one of the independant specialsts?
Your help would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Dazzler

Hi Dazzler,

1. They were just being stupid and maybe lost some of the humour in translation, it's not illegal (yet)
2. Any indi would do, it's not brain sugery. so don't worry too much.

Another fan of the Oettle Exhaust.Sounds great and really comes on song at higher revs.Needed a new set of clamps on fitting.

Mike,

Was that your car on Tony's ramp today? Looked rather smart. If you need someone to put a few more miles on it for you, let me know........ [:D]

Will be having the same exhaust mod at the next service. Will be interesting to hear what a 45k silencer sounds like.
