Exhaust noise

Anyone got any ideas what various exhaust make noise wise? I just tested mine this morning and it's making 92dB at idle and 116dB at 5,000 rpm! That sounds pretty high to me, and it will be keeping me off most tracks I guess.

That's with a standard system with cat bypass, G-pipe and 3.5" slash cut tailpipe.

Test it at 4000 RPM, I think that's what most tracks test it at. Although I don't know how close you put the noise meter.

4,500 won't reduce it much, but I'll try. I also thought it was 1m away at a 45 degree angle, so it could go up at 50cm.

If you search the 964RS posts you'll probably come up with the answers for the three main configurations as there are regular posts about noise levels for track. It's basically the same exhaust for the RS and standard 964 so answers apply to our cars too.

In order of quietest to noisiest

Cats, back silencer, end silencer (standard set up)
De-cat, back pipe, end silencer
De-cat, back silencer, G-pipe

You've currently got the loudest combination :)

Ian.

Measure at 75% max revs at 75cm/45 degrees from exhaust tip.

While you are doing this, could you see if any difference by putting foot on clutch and also if different on tarmac/gravel/grass away or close to buildings?

I think sun or cloudy and ambient temp and pressure setting also make a difference.

The car is in the garage for 4 weeks now while I got to New Zealand, but I'll have a play when I get back.

The measurement I took was as I say from roughly 1m and 45 degrees from the tip at 5,000rpm which I guess was a bit higher than 75% maximum revs. It was just outside the open garage (which it attached to the house) on tarmac and it was cloudy at the time.
