Exhaust options

Looks like i am about to buy a MY04 'S' and am wondering if it is possible to do anything with the exhaust?

I drove an anniversary car and it sounded great! What is the difference in the exhaust between the anniversary and standard 986 's'?

It seems to be listed as a 'stainless tail pipe' on the anniversary car and looks really great from the back.

Any options / advice gratefully received, but i dont want the full boy racer sound...!

Thanks

Rick

The only difference was the bolt on exhaust tip on the 550. This was available as an accessory for the standard exhaust

Pre-facelift 986's however did not have a seperate bolt-on tip - there was only the whole silencer box with tips welded on.

What year are you getting?

I believe the 550 had different air filter creating a better induction sound track [;)] You could fit a stainless steel sports exhaust from several sources personally when I had a MY03 facelift I had a Roock exhaust that sounded fantastic. Purchased from J Z Machtech Tel: 07000 100 911

thanks guys,

Mark it is an 04 MY on a 04 reg. How much is the anniversary end piece?

I am sure the anniversary car sounded much sweeter!

Rick

I've no idea how much the emd piece is I'm afraid... (but I bet it's not exactly a give-away [&:])
I can't see that it would be responsible for the sound though - I think Robert's air-filter/intake side idea is more likely. I do remember that the 550 claimed an extra 8 to 10 BHP over the standard S. There must have been something to do that!

The limited edition 550 model was very special indeed and came "fully loaded" from the factory which included an uprated air intake (taken from the Cayman S) to give it an extra 6bhp and additional torque over a "normal" Boxster S.

I think this is where the different sounding engine note comes from and certainly not from the "550 exhaust tip" [:)]

As the owner of a Boxster 550 S Anniversary Edition, could I make a couple of ammendments to your listt of "standard kit".

Firstly, the "standard" interior colour for the 550 was "Cocoa Brown". This included a brown hood and brown carpets & mats.

It didn't come with the full Bose sound system as standard, just an uprated system with subwoofers in the doors and the Porsche "MOST" interface.

And finally, whilst it does have OBC, it doesn't have cruise control.

You are correct about the engine sound though. The "550" does indeed have a different inlet manifold/air box creating an extra 6 bhp and more of a growl inside the car when you accelerate hard.

I have a TechArt system and it sounds fantastic and fills the bumper space very nicely. Plus the quality is second to none and the only downside is the price!

Funny, I recognise some of that spec daro ;)

That was the spec of my car - there were 2 colours of interior, either cocoa or natural grey. The exhaust on the 550 is identical to that on a facelift 'S'. There was a little-known factory exhaust produced for the facelift boxster but I think there are cheaper options out there.

I really don't think it would make any difference on buying an exhaust for your Boxster...

If they do go bust it would be very sad, but the real engineering there will no doubt carry on trading and developing under a different name, albeint under close scrutiny I'm sure...

I guess the minor risk is that you place an order for a product and pay for it, between payment and delivery time they go under, and you are stuck in a long line of creditors waiting for your money back. If their suppliers think they are a default risk they may not ship out the parts needed to make the product.
There is no guarantee their next venture, under a new name, would make good on orders under the Techart name, or fulfil warranty claims.

Agreed and I wouldn't look at buying anything from them directly, but to buy an exhaust from Tech9 in Liverpool which is in stock would be a pretty safe bet I'd think.

Its very high grade stainless so warranty is unlikely to ever be needed anyway.

I'm more concerned about my engine remap, but worst case if it goes wrong I'll take it to 9ff or Ruf for resetting ;o)

The standard Facelift Boxster 3.2 tailpipe trim is £164.03 +VAT. The anniversary one will be around the same. It males no differencce to the engine note its even called Ornamental by Porsche.
