Exhaust replacement for a 987.1 RS60 3.4s

To those who may know !
I am trying to find a decent replacement for my exhaust system including the back boxes. The car is fitted with and active valve system, but I am unclear whether this happen further up the system. I am not keen on the car being necessarily louder and it needs to be MoT compliant, I am just looking for a reasonably priced replacement, hopefully in stainless steel to future proof the car, but thats not critical.
All the products out there seem to be offering louder pipe work with or without the back cat set up.
I am struggling a little probably through a lack of detailed knowledge of what on balance would be the best option.
Any thoughts gratefully received.

Hi Julian,

A lot depends upon whether you’re just looking for a cat back system or if you need a full system: manifolds, cats and silencers.

I can’t recommend any specific system but there are a number available at a range of prices, both with and without valves [which are part of the cat back system]. Typical suppliers are Milltek, Dansk, Remus and Fabspeed, although there are many others, and don’t discount Porsche’s own PSE system where as a PCGB member you’ll be eligible for a 10% parts discount. If you want a relatively cheap solution you may want to have a look at Carnewal.

Hopefully someone will be along with some first-hand experience of one of the systems. The only thing I will say is that you really need to listen to a car that’s fitted with an aftermarket system to confirm it’s suitability; don’t base your choice exclusively on video data which in my experience is very unreliable.

Hi Jeff
Thanks for help.
I believe the headers and cats at the front of the system are fine, its the usual area of corrosion from the wheel arches back to the exhaust tips, which is starting to corrode. I am not keen on adding valves to the system, so hopefully that will make it cheaper.
I totally agree that listening to the system is critical, which leads me back to the standard Porsche system, but the prices are eye wateringly expensive, though I am sure I could get sections of the system over time. My current exhaust is in ok shape, but its corroded heavily in places around the back boxes, which started me looking for a replacement.
It will check out top gear link and see if they do a series 1 system?
Appreciate your input and as you say hopefully someone out there will have some first hand experience to provide a little more focus.
Thanks
Julian

Understood Julian, and I hope that someone will be along with some firsthand experience and advice.

I mentioned the Carnewal system, and it’ll be worth taking a look at Gert’s offering:

As you can see he provides a modified original exhaust on exchange which matches the age and mileage of your own car, although that may prove to be an obstacle in terms of its longevity. His exhausts are reviewed well, being close to original at lower revs but more exciting as the revs climb; and with no booms! Very reasonably priced too at around £470.

I have the Carnewal exhaust on my 987 3.2S. It's actually a modification to the standard system. I drove over to Belgium two years ago for Gert to do the work that took less than two hours. You can retain the stock exhaust tips or change them. I went with used 981 tips that I took with me and he fitted. The car goes through an MOT with no problem at all.

Under light loads and motorway driving it's a little louder and deeper than standard, especially cold start in the winter. Foot down and about 4000rpm it's a different animal, but not too loud. My wife and I both love it and would not change a thing about the exhaust. As a bonus, the Carnewal mod also got rid of the flat spot at 3500rpm so picks up much better.

If you have any questions let me know.

That's great feedback from you both and I think a trip to Belgium may well be in order. I make several trips a year to Germany, I havent taken the Boxster, but looks like a ready made excuse. The RS60 just sailed through its MoT, but I think some action before next year will be required. The MoT issue is important to me so I will reach out to Carnewal and see what can be done.
I really appreciate your input.
All the best

I'll echo what @Ti Rich says

I had a 987.1 2.7 for going on 7 years and only 3 months into ownership I pulled the pin on a Carnewal rear exhaust, just the back boxes.
He supplied me with an age appropriate exhaust, and its a genuine Porsche item, he just removes one of the secondary cats on each side to give it a more sporty sound.

I received my modified silencers and removed my old ones and sent them back to him in the same box.

So much fun, never regretted spending the money.
All pretty civilised when you're just driving around sedately and as Ti Tich says, get the revs moving and push the throttle harder and you get an altogether different sound to stock.
A harder edged, crisp, higher pitched exhaust note its just fantastic.

He does the standard silencers and the valved silencers - worth dropping him an email, his communication is spot on.

The only issue is if your part exchange exhaust is not quite in the condition that he needs?
Get in touch and send him some pics
