Exhaust Replacement

Good morning all 996'ers,

Can anyone provide advise on self changing of the mufflers and tips on a 99(T) C2 Tip. I am considering doing the job myslef and would like to know any tips and what pitfalls to avoid.

Also when changing the mufflers would you also change the short and long spacers and damping piece as part of the support (items 34,35,36 of the illustrated parts catalogue)

Regards

Hello,

Pitfalls = Rusty bolts

As for changing the mufflers personally I prefer stock or modded stock but not aftermarket

It will only take you about 30 min to an hour, And just replace the bolts in the sleeves.

As Richard says, the main pitfall is rusty bolts and clamps.

I don't think you'll have trouble with items 34/35/36, as they don't corrode much (famous last words). I would definitely get a new pair of exhaust tip clams as a minimum (item, 22 on my list) as you will struggle to get them off if they are originals, and you will probably end up cutting them. The clamping sleeves (29) can sometimes be a challenge, so if you aren't getting new ones give them a good soak in WD-40 the night before.

If you jack up the car at the back, put it on axle stands, and remove the rear wheels, you will find it a lot easier to work on.

Thank you gents for the knowledge.

I do have a question on the whole jacking and stands matter.

What is the best way to jack the car so you can place it on axle stands? My stand have a V top so I don't think they will interface well with standard jask points?

Regards

I use a jack pad on the jacking point, and then jack it up enough to get the stand under the cross member of the cast aluminium frame for the suspension. Don't jack it on the engine, as it can damage the hydraulic mounts.
