Exhaust smell.....?

Having done a little Googling, I ordered a hatch seal from Porsche today.

Is it likely to sort the problem? Any tips for fitting it?

It might sort it, but I would suggest you also check the seal on the rear lights by playing a hose on them, and make sure your hatch locks are nicely adjusted. Fit some new hatch struts as well & the hatch will raise on its own which is very satisfying.

Fitting is straightforward, but you need to really push it into the corners, otherwise you can end up with too much seal to fit on the final side.

Length of the tailpipe has had a large bearing on some of the cars i've owned in the past.
Try an experiment by extending the tailpipe a little bit with whatever pipe you may have kicking around in your garage. You could even use some plastic waste pipe for a quick trip around the block. - The back end of the exhaust doesn't get *that* hot.
If this cures the smell, you can remove the O/E bolt on stainless part of the tailpipe and have one made up to the required length at a custom exhaust fabricator.

Theres a shed load of grommits in the back of the car too - check they are all present.

I expect the fumes are being sucked into your car via the rear light pods especially when the sunroof or window is open as you drive . You need to find out where before you go ordering lots of parts that are not needed.
You could try smearing clear vasoline around the mating surface of your hatch rubber then closing and opening the hatch. Any areas not creating a good airtight seal will be obvious.

As Edh said its probably being drawn in around the perished seals to the car's rear light pods. These are difficult to test other than with a water spray as suggested. It wouldn't hurt to remove them and apply some silicon seal. This has been covered before and I cannot recall what sealant mastic was decided to be the best now.

Also check the seals to the number plate lights which will almost certainly be leaking. They are behind the carpet out of sight.
