Exhaust smoking - incorrect oil?

I have a 1998 turbo, mileage 30k, and I'm having a persistent problem with excessive exhaust smoke, particularly when cold.

This problem began after I had a minor service carried out by my local OPD (Colchester). They only changed oil, brake fluid etc. and I have had this issue ever since - and despite the car going back to them twice, they still haven't solved it. On the last visit, they changed the oil, cleaned out the turbos and said they replaced some valves (excuse my lack of technical knowledge) but yesterday I ran the car for over 10 minutes and while the smoke dissipated, it was still present.

The specialist who I bought the car from told me that Mobil 1 was the only oil which should be used, however the OPD used Magnatec and insisted that was the correct oil. I was wondering whether anyone else had any views on the subject?

My car has always made white smoke when starting from cold but soon clears. I have been told this is normal. If yours is smoking continously it sounds like you have a problem, sorry.

This might help. Talks about how the Turbo's can syphon oil when turned off which can result in this particularly if oil level is high. Also talks about a modified check valve for this problem.

I would suspect that the wrong oil filter has been used and/or over tightened. Read the piston heads thread as Phelix summary is probably spot on. Theres no way its the oil you have to suspect the OPC and an inexperienced mechanic.

You would be well advised to pay a visit to your local independant before they do any more damage!

Use Autostrasse, Coggeshall, 01376 562922, dear boy. Keep well away from the OPC.

Shocking. Their advert should read

"Pay premium rates to have your car serviced by someone who knows nothing about it"

993s and OPCs do not mix, judging by the horror stories you hear.
