Exhaust specialist needed......

About 7 years ago I had an ESS decat fitted by RPM as my original cat had split. All was good and it seemed to liberate a few more
horses as well.

However, for the past 2 years before now, I'd had to have it removed twice to be re welded and refitted at cost of several hundred
pounds. This year I put the car in for MOT and it passed with only an advisory a small leak in the exhaust. Although I wasn't able to
see where, I was told it was at the front of the decat.

On start up and until the engine's fully warm, there's an annoying slight resonance in the cabin causing a bit of trim rattle.

I've had it with this and want to replace the decat with something else. IIRC the original pipework was cut so the fitting isn't
standard now.

Can anyone recommend a fabricator for this?, somewhere within an hour or so from Amersham-Sth Bucks?.....I'd be happy to take
the car to measured up and come back to have it fitted.

They made a system for a friend's car which I subsequently bought years later. Suffice to say the workmanship was great.

I have H&S on mine, they have a jig made up for a decat pipe so they could fabricate one and ship it to you.

Haywood and Scott as I was well aware of, but think of them as Southbound are to upholstering - good quality, but very
expensive.

Many thanks Simon for the Infinity link - hadn't heard of them, but looking at the site, they could be just the ticket. Bit further
than ideal, but an easy run up the M4.

I'd be looking at getting it done on a while you wait basis. To help, I think I'll pop round the local exhaust place under the premise
of maybe needing a new unit, and take some underneath photos of the whole system with the car on the ramp [;)]

I'll give Infinity a ring and let you know how I get on.

Hayward & Scott:

+ Quality
- Excessive price

Agreed.

One thing to be aware of with Infinity and other Longlife outlets is that they will tend to cut the stock flanges off and put their pipe over the top of the pipe which they cut. This of course can make life awkward should you wish to reinstate a stock part. I suspect it is quicker and cheaper for such operators to operate.

Of course you could ask them if they could keep the stock flanges in place, albeit with a price increase.

Very good point Chas, I certainly don't want the decat pipe to be welded to the down pipe. IIRC the current Janspeed decat has
the original flange fitting to the Dansk back box, but I think RPM 'cut and shut' sleeved the front of the decat to the down pipe. it's
had to removed twice for welding by 3rd party then refitted.

This is from distant memory, which is why I thought under side photos might help. I spoke to Ross at Infinity this morning and am
awaiting a call back. Off down to the local monkey exhaust place and will report back.

Back from the exhaust place and when I pointed out how low it was sitting, they said they couldn't get it on their ramp.....
especially when I showed the slight damage to the rear n/s lower quarter after a previous visit to a specialist...but that's another
story.

After a quick phone call, they gave me the details of a garage up the road who've got a floor level lift and would have a look if I
phoned to book a time in between MOT's. Fair play to the guys who showed a genuine interest and concern.

Back from the local garage, small clean workshop with 3 ramps, got the car on the ramp within 5 mins of arrival. They were happy
for me to look under and take pics and it was a mixture of good and bad news......

The good news is that I don't need a new decat pipe.....the bad news is the problem is due to a blow in the connection between the
front of the decat and the down pipe. Apparently, the piece of pipe that sleeved the front pipe was too big and had been 'squashed
to fit' with the clamp and I could feel it blowing in two places at the top.

Not very impressed with work done last year by Indie and their 3rd party welder. I've booked it in after Bank Holiday and assured me they
could sort it. Offered either to weld the down pipe directly to the decat, or as I elected for ease of future replacement, to paste and
and re clamp, leak free guaranteed.

Now I'm looking at the photo, I can't see any isolation rubber between the exhaust through the bracket to the underbody. I'm now
thinking this could be the cause of a slight but annoying vibration that's been bugging me for ages. I'm thinking some rubber washers
under that bracket would probably cure that.

Comments from the panel always appreciated.

Isn't the rubber at the top of the hanging bracket, my heat shield in that area was causing an annoying rattle so I bent it inwards a bit and the rattle went, oh the heat shield by my wastgate also gave off an annoying rattle.

£320 for a full stainless system fitted to 968 and 951! haven't dealt with them personally but they have been recommended to me by other club members.
