Exhaust studs?

Hi all.

1991 964 Turbo 2.

Simple question, what type of metal / material are the exhaust studs and nuts that hold the manifolds to the cylinder head?

My exhaust system sounds like it has started leaking again. It has a Hayward And Scott full exhaust system fitted, it's had previous attempts to repair leaking from the manifold to cylinder head joints before I bought the car. So this isn't a new problem.
Any how reason I ask is because I took a trip to my nearist Porsche Centre to order some parts to do the job, and was quoted £2.17 for each stud and the same for each nut + VAT. This doesn't sound much until you total it all up, £61.19 !!! for twelve studs with nuts! Which got me thinking maybe they are made from something other than the usual mild steel found in most applications.

Any ideas?

Buy 'em! They may look like ordinary nuts and bolts but they're likely to formed in a specialised (and expensive) material, for example nimonic, to prevent heat distortion and seizure.

Clive
NB. Nimonic is a Nickel-Chromium-alloy having high stress-rupture strength and creep resistance at high temperatures (up to about 950°C) and is widely used and well proven alloy in high temperature conditions. Applications include the aerospace industry. (End of lecture)

Oooh! Never heard of Nimonic before.

Could possibly be that they were replaced in good faith with normal studs when the stainless system was fitted originaly. Maybe it's the route cause of this reoccuring problem.

Cheers for the advice Lancerlot!
