Exhaust Tip - Having a laugh.

I wanted to post this as I am flabbergasted at Porsche trying to rip me off big time for a small part for my 964 Turbo.

The chrome tip on the right hand exhaust has gone a little dull (not as nice and shiny as the left side turbo exhaust). I thought that to get the car looking 100%, I will splash out on a new exhaust tip. This item is about 6 inches long and secures via a clamp around the exhaust outlet. I estimated it would be £70-£80. I was dreaming !! £249 plus VAT Porsche quoted me. When I queried this, it was because it was classed as a classic Porsche. This has left a real bitter taste in my mouth over trying to rip owners off - how can such a simple part cost close on £300?

If anybody knows of a right hand standard chrome exhaust tip in 100% condition for a 964 Turbo, please let me know.

I feel better already by typing this.....

Regards

Jeremy

Don't even entertain them - take it off, strip the clamp off (may as well do both) and get them re-chromed locally - it'll cost peanuts !! That'll teach 'em ! [;)]

there's a post on the RS section similar to this; I had the same problem with some plastic door handles which went from an already un-realistic £49+vat each to £200+ each!! Apparently theres been some parts price "harmonization" and some went up, some went down.. I've yet to find one that went down!

Onto the tips, power soap is awesome, but if they are really bad, try the following which works a treat on old chrome merc parts!.. remove them from the car, stick them in a sink full of hot (boiling if poss) water with washing powder or vanish in it.. the stuff is amazing at getting dirt off, but you might need quite a lot.. Leave them to soak for a while (couple of hours) and then get scrubbing!.. Most of the crap will come off and then you are left with a clean exhaust tip. If its still dull/pitted then set to with some wet, fine wet and dry sand paper to remove the bits, then some really fine wirewool and wax to remove the marring from the W&D, then some car polish will get rid of the marring from the wirewool.. You should be able to get them back to looking like new

An alternative if you are a single guy, or don't mind the wrath of the mrs; my best mate takes the exhaust tips off his SL55 and puts them in the dishwasher.. they come up brilliantly, and yes, straight in there with the dishes!

try cleanyourcar.co.uk
they do P21s products as I buy my wax from there.. Im not sure whether the power soap is on the website, but if not contact the guys and Im sure they can get some for you.. they seem really helpful

Despite polishing the chrome it is going dull because of the very small cracks on its surface.

The only way to get it looking good for a long time is to get it stripped, polished and then chromed again using a good technique. Then it will look different from the other one [:D] so you have to do both!!

I used the fabspeed tips. They go yellow and don't keep as shiny as the OEM.
Because my wastgate pipe disintegrated, and I replaced the pair, I have a spare right hand exhaust tip. Its in ok condition and the chrome is still shiny. If you want it email me, or see me at the next Cornbury House Sunday (4th). £50 plus postage sound fair?
