Exhaust Tip

Evening all
I have today parted company with my exhaust tip. I have a genuine porsche back box but was always baffled as to why it is stainless steel apart from the tip which looked like mild steel and was painted black. So can I replace this tip or do I need a full back box? The rest of the back box is in good order as you would expect from stainless!!

Turbo's were fitted with a mild steel black tip from the factory, other models were fitted with a chrome tip, the black tips were NLA from OPC. The

Silly idea but that is exactly what I have, or had lol! I think I will go to an exhaust fab place tomorrow and see if they can attach a sensible looking oval tip as the remaining 90% of the exhaust is in tip top order!

Right all sorted. OPC have chrome tips available. £67 plus vat then obviously need to get it fitted. I got this stainless steel number supplied and fitted for £60 and it is of course stainless steel! Looks fairly stock but I think defo looks better than the black mild steel tip originally supplied.

The tips on a 968 are black painted stainless - so a little work with a flap wheel (off the car) converts them into lovely shiny tips!!

I had always wondered if my black tip was original, as my S had a polished tip - now I know!!

How is the original tip held on - welded? I've never looked too closely.

Looking good Scam - did it sound any different when the old tip fell off?

Sounded like my exhaust was trashed. Which is quite amazing when you think it was only the last 8 inches or so that had come off. However it has clearly just been exhaust gasses resonating about under the rear valance which was causing the noise. I didn't think I was down on power so it was a bit weird till I stopped and saw the issue.

The original tip is welded on. Why Porsche would want to weld a mild steel tip on to an otherwise stainless system is beyond me and seems bonkers stupid. Maybe they wanted a reason to sell us a few back boxes over the years!!
