exhaust tips

Hi all,

my exhaust tips are looking a little tired and rusty...can anybody advise how I can get them looking like new. How much to replace them and is it a diy job to do this ?

Initially try something like Autsol to clean things up. If there is rust you could use some fine grain wet&dry then use Autosol agaim

I used 1200's wet and dry paper to clean mine, using soapy water to ease the cutting and remove all the carbon desposit, then use some kind of metal polish to buff them after.
 
Mine appear to be stainless steel, I use Scotch Bright ( the green scouring pad stuff ) dry on mine and it gives them a satin type finish which I think looks good.
 
Wire wool... various grades of it depending how much requires doing... the finest gives a beautiful polished finish; can be hard work the first time, but worth the effort. ;-)
 
I used my little Black & Decker tool on them (bit like a Dremmel), with great results. Polished up beautifully. Tool's about 40 quid but great for all sorts of jobs & cut through the rusty seized clamp bolts when I was fitting my RSRs. Best investment in ages! [8D]
 
Remove them and take them to a metal polisher. I did it before Christmas, it cost me £15 and they still look like they've just been chromed!

I used A & C Metal Finishers (Unit 11, Penarth Centre, Penarth St, London, SE15 1TR Tel: 020 7732 8222) who did a fantastic job while I waited.
 
Fine grade wire wool and some autosoll. Wont take long and will look great at the end....oh and wire wool is also good for cleaning the office tea spoons to!!!

I think the whole subject of exhaust tips for 993's is pretty complicated [:(]

As I understand it, there are different tips for narrow bodied vs wide bodied, then different tips within the various ranges - small bore, wide bore, Motorsound etc.... plus various aftermarket options to add to the mix

Sure someone will be along with the "One True Way" in a while [;)]

Hi Mark,

I have some experience of this as my local Porsche Centre supplied me with the wrong "Sports Tails Pipe" (This is the name used in the original Tequipment brochure for the 993, big oval pipes). There are different sports tail pipes for standard body and wide body cars and different again for the Turbo. The standard body pipes are straight through, i.e. the inlet and outlet pipes are in line. The S and 4S inlet and outlet pipes are offset. The pipes for the standard body are interchangeable between left and right, the wide bodies are not. Part numbers as follows :-

Carrera and Carrera 4: 000 044 200 01
Carrera S and Carrera 4S, left: 993 111 981 02
Carrera S and Carrera 4S, right: 993 111 982 02
Turbo, left: 993 111 981 01
Turbo, right: 993 111 982 01

They look great but are bloody expensive.

As you can see I am really busy on a Monday morning. Aren't recessions great !!
